2009-03-28: Calico

Post by OLLIE » Sun Mar 29, 2009 11:17 am

Several of us made it out to Calico yesterday. We had a four/five truck caravan from San Diego to Calico. After a few stops on the way we finally arrived to the meet site in Odessa Canyon just after 09:30. We unhooked the tow Samurai, aired down, then headed off to run the Wall Street route as shown in Charles Wells' offroad book. In the group we had sdnative, cmjrfan8, cruiserlarry, Stef, gon2srf & Gibson, steveskj & wife, Terry & girlfriend, and myself with son & mutt. When we hit Bismark Mine at the top of the Odessa/Doran Loop, we also picked up bruisedfj. We ended up at Wall Street overlook entrance after several wrong turns. Watched several Jeeps make their way down before splitting up the group. Some of us didn't have the desire to continue on the originally planned route and some did. (We still want to hear about those waterfalls. ;) ) My group consisting consisting of sdnative, steveskj, terry, and Stef went to explore further up a valley we had stumbled across earlier in the run. We pleasantly surprised at our find of some breath taking overlooks near the top of Calico Peak. Eventually we turned around and headed back the way we came. After airing up and getting back on the road a few of us at some supper at Bob's Big Boy (a first for me). I finally arrived home about 21:45. Having woke my son up at 05:30 it had been a very long day. Did I mention I was under the weather to boot. I had a great day despite how I felt. I look forward to hitting the trails again with you all soon. I will attach pics just as son as I down size them a bit.

Thanks for the report, Ollie. Good pics. I'll just have to wait for another informal run up there.

Well here is some of the stuff all those Jeepers did :D

Date: 3-27 -3-29
Trails/Area: Calico
Rating: Varied, Easy to Extreme
Well let me take a drink to this one
I had a nice time camping with ya all and the wheeling was equally good. Some of the trail where a bif congested and not shared as well as they should by some other 4x4 clubsn but with as many people as there were this weekend, that was to be expected.
It could not supress my fun between that and a couple of breakdowns the day got a little longer then it should but we ran all the trails we set out to run.
Let me tell ya Wallstreet alone is just a barrel of fun. Just got home so will kick back a bit before I post some pics

I was able help out with the clean-up put together by MyJeepRocks.com on Friday. I posted those pics here:

Calico has some great terrain.

Some stones just can't be left unturned. SDNative had to jump into this challenge first, but my camera wasn't quick enough to get him here.

Gon2Srf charges to the rescue, but alas, CruiserLarry was already there.

The need for the aforementioned rescue:

A precarious position. The photo doesn't quite capture the angles or the crazy amount of large loose rock.

My brother Eric tended the sausages that we and Gon2Srf brought (topped with cmjrfan8's pepperjack cheese :P) and Sunnygrill's famous shish kabobs :P :P so we could work on the jeep with full stomachs.

Late Saturday afternoon, CruiserLarry, Gon2Srf, Cmjrfan8, Sunnygrill and his trailer, and I went searching for a dream spot for camping (where were we? I'll never tell) that those guys had previously stumbled upon. While searching for it, Nikos found himself in a narrow canyon and kept climbing to find a spot to turn around.

Some of his friends at MJR came out with spare parts and tools. Kudos to them as the repair was not complete until 1:37 AM. I think each of us had to contribute at least one tool to get the job done. cmjrfan8 also lost a shock earlier in the day (sheared off the lower mount!), but didn't have any problems other than feeling more like he was driving his boat instead of his jeep.

Looks like a most interesting time. I am going to have to bring the FJ back from Havasu to wheel with you all again. As I was coming home from Havasu yesterday, I saw many Jeeps and Gone to Surf on the 15. I honked at Scott a couple of times, but I don't think he saw me, from just before Victorville until he got off on the 138. Then again I was driving the SRT8. I was a bit lower then he was. :D

Wish you could have joined us. It was a great day.

I think I saw aw12345 on the way home too. Honked at him several times, but just couldn't get his attention.
