Re: GAS CANS
Unfotunately, most of the decent gas cans (Scepter, Wedco) are no longer legal to sell in the U.S.; so sourcing one is very difficult (I was a Scepter dealer). Currently, Blitz, makers of the easily recognized red steel cans, has a new CARB model that we now carry. It is much better than previous versions, and we've tested them - they don't leak when closed. The filler hose assembly is complex (thanks to emission regulations) but works OK in most vehicles. So while not perfect, and not as simple as the mil-spec Scepter cans, it is finally a usable alternative to previous models.David wrote:Anyone have any leads on where a decent gas can can be purchased. (The cans sell for $54.95 each, FYI)

Couple of comments here:unwiredadventures wrote:Expedition Exchange has some of them in stock:

You'll need to ship them out of state though.
It is not appropriate to post up suggestions on how to circumvent state law on a public forum - you put the entire enterprise in jeopardy of legal action.
Additionally, it is no longer legal to sell non-CARB approved fuel containers in any state in the US - so a retailer will find themselves in violation of Federal law if they sell and ship Wedco or Scepter cans to CA or any state. Scepter (based in Canada, and the supplier of all fuel and water containers for the US armed forces) will not even ship any mil-spec fuel container to any address in the US except an approved military base, so there are none to be had (unless someone has some very old inventory). You also put all businesses involved at risk of serious fines for taking part, knowingly or otherwise, in this "plan". And the purchaser is also subject to fines, so they could become very expensive cans....
If someone has the urge to purchase or sell anything in violation of state laws, we kindly ask that they do not post methodology on this forum...
Thank you....

Re: GAS CANS
Well said, my post has been edited.
Yes, their stock was manufactured before the changes.

Re: GAS CANS
Ok, so what cans are illegal and why? Also, what is CARB? I'll be getting a roof rack soon and am in the market for some cans myself.

Re: GAS CANS
CARB is California Air Resource Board. they make all the rules regarding emissions ans such. A carb compliant gas can has a spring type of spout that closes when not actively in use. The theory is that less fuel will vent or evaporate into the air, Kinda like the vacuum boots on the gas pumps out here.(they don't have them back east) In actuality, in my experience, The carb nozzles are even worse than the old school bendy spouts, Since they are so short(too short for my truck anyway), there is a funnel type attachment that you have to put into your filler neck, then the spout presses onto that and EVERY DAMN TIME it burps and splashes about half a cup of fuel out before it starts flowing properly. This happened on both cans no matter how I held them. It's just more BS under the guise of protecting us and the environment. I'm sure someone is getting rich off it. Sorry the last part is my opinion only and does not necessarily reflect the beliefs and opinions of OAUSA. like the disclaimer? lol
