My New Headache

Post by ssc » Tue Apr 14, 2009 11:01 pm

So the vet butchers the family dog. I had purchased him for my son 9 years ago-I think all boys need a dog. He is a German Shepherd. After running him around to different vets and emergency hospitals, because the vet closes at 5, so then transport to hospital, and they close at 8am, so then transport to vet etc and after spending $3,000 with these idiots telling me to keep doing it because the dog isn't getting better-I pulled the plug.

That's right, I brought him home and then took him to my breeder. We got him off the morphine etc, got him to eat and he is doing well. We took out the stiches and he is spoiled. Of course, spending time at the breeder, who has German import stock, all with degrees from Germany etc, I just had to have a pup for myself. The pup I wanted was 5 months old and not for sale. He was getting ready to start training for schutzhund and was going to be used in her breeding program. We cut a deal and I got my new headache.

I forgot what a pain pups can be. The score is puppy aka Gunner ten and 2 hoses DOA, as is the AC compressor line and some of my skins from Africa. The moulding around the back door is going and he and Puddy Cat love to jump on the windows. Now I have to reconfigure the FJ or get an 80 so he has room in the back. He wheels with me in the ford. Talk about barking!! I wonder why I make my life so difficult?

Then again, I have been without my own dog for many years and I now remember the love and joy they do bring to you. He does make me mad, but he sure can bring many laughs.

Sorry about your loss. What a bummer.

The pup looks fantastic! I love German Sheperds. I would love to have one, but my wife said no more dogs after we had to put her Sheltie down.

I got my Malamute as as adult, so I didn't have to go through the puppy pains. However, he did get his big bushy tail caught it something and tore it up pretty bad. That cost me about $1500 in vet bills. Never did figure out what he caught it in. He looked pretty goofy with that shaved rats tail and a hairy Malamute body.

Eric, no loss after we brought the old man home. He has done well away from the vet. Now you have to find me an 80 to take him wheeling. :D

Blue, vet bills are crazy and I trust vets as far as I can throw my FJ.

oh come on guys! having worked in the field of veterinary medicine for over 15 years i can promise you that not all VETS are highway robbers. i can tell you that...if you dont trust or like your vet....CHANGE! unfortunately with the state of the economy the last few years and prices of products and supplies steadily increasing....a lot of privately owned veterinarians have had to sell out to what we call "corporate". they will still keep the name, staff will usually remain the same, vets on staff will usually remailn (at least for a short while)........but they are run by a bigger machine. dollars matter, "selling" is common place, etc. there is a loss of empathy and sympathy, it becomes less personal and more business. THESE ARE THE PLACES TO STAY AWAY FROM.

i still have the very fortunate experience of working for a vets office that wont refuse a sick animal, we have all taken an oath to help animals. we do it for the warm fuzzy feeling inside and not the paycheck! prices go up, medicine prices increase all the time, the cost of anti-venom has doubled on cost and yet we dont raise our prices but by a few dollars. because we know the end consumer cant afford it these days.

if you only knew what happened in the back you wouldnt be so negative or ignorant in your thoughts. EMERGENCY CLINICS are highway robbers! I will give you that much. their prices are usually double a normal vets office...but you are paying for an emergency service. i dont think that its right...its unfair....but its life. you'll pay more for a plumber to come to your house on a weekend too!

as for animal treatments...it can get costly. unfortunately animals cant talk and tell us where it hurts. the only way to rule out or diagnose a problem is unfortunately to run tests, sometimes costly tests. xrays, bloodwork, ultrasounds, ekg's, medications, etc...........it all adds up but what other way is there to figure it out? and if you have a BIG DOG it will cost more. (more meds, more sedation or anesthesia, etc)

as for a $300 dental....i can tell you thats an average price for a prophy. you have pre-operative anelgesia (pain), pre-op sedation, anesthesia using isoflourane which is EXPENSIVE but SAFE, IV catheter and fluids to assist in hydration and recovery from anesthesia, ultrasonic scaling of the teeth, hand scaling of the sub-gingival area of each tooth, possible deep root planning, possible xrays or extractions, polishing to remove stains, excess tarter and rough areas where tarter will or could continue to adhere, flouride treatment, charting of all the teeth.....then we sit with the animal while it wakes up and recovers, give it more pain meds, antibiotic injection, etc.....by now we are usually 1.5-2 hours into the care of your animal. while it remains with us the rest of the day we let it out a few times to to potty, feed and water him or her, pet it a few hundred times, etc.

i've always or generally do prophys on my dogs yearly. my dogs live to be 17 years old though and have no health issues. bad teeth can lead to heart dz, organ failure, etc. its more than just tarter on the teeth.

so i'm off my soapbox now.

Bo,
I appreciate your position. Yes there are good and bad in all area's. I shouldn't generalize. However, The majority of vets I have dealt with over the past few years have been a bit less than honest. It has become clear that with the down turn in the economy, they are stirring the pot for more money when they shouldn't. ( same as happens in my profession) I believe I have now found a competent and ethical vet. I won't bore you with the situation I recently went through.

In my field, there are many times I have informed potential clients that their best course of action is to do nothing. I don't like to see $5,000 walk out my door, but I sleep well at night. Sometimes it is better not to open Pandora's box. Are there others in my profession who take the money and then the client ends up in a difficult and/or worse position? Yes. I then get many folks in my office who want me to clean up the mess.

Same happens at the vet. Unfortunately, it is the poor animal who suffers.
