Anza Borrego-Chariot Cyn to Sheep Cyn 04/18/09

Post by gon2srf » Mon Apr 20, 2009 10:46 am

My wife Kim and I visited Anza Borrego on Saturday with fellow cruisers Rfjtoy and Brentba. We met in Laguna Niguel then headed south on the 5 taking the 78 through Julian to Banner and then hopped on the trail. After running Chariot to Rodriguez and into Oriflamme we drove out to Carrizo Canyon. On Chariot we ran into a lady, whom we would later find out, was attempting to visit all the state parks in the US. She was in an old Mustang loaded to the gills with gear and had been stuck for days until being recently helped by some passerby's. We checked to see if she was fine and her only was request was a cigarette. LOL.

We headed down the 78 taking the S2 southeast. I was hoping we were going to head northwest at Sweeny Pass and head toward Arroyo Del Tapiado but Brent had other plans. We went south into Carrizo Canyon. It was hot and dry, we even ran into a group of humanitarians who were dropping off water in several well known routes for the illegals. It was in the mid 90's by noon so after lunch we drove back to the 78 heading west until we jumped on the S3 into Borrego Springs. Except me, no one in our group had ever been to the ABSDP visitor center so we stopped in for a brief tour. The visitors center was bustling with tourists. We headed east on Palm Canyon to Del Reggio and aired down at the entrance to Coyote Canyon. Driving up to Coyote towards Sheep Canyon, the Occotillo's were in full bloom and the desert was as colorful as can be. The water levels are way down as expected and there weren't many folks out due to the heat. Reaching Sheep Canyon we set up camp and took a hike up the North Fork to the waterfall. A huge sycamore has fallen, virtually blocking the view of the waterfall. The view had been altered so much at first I didn't recognize where we were. Hopefully this winter there will be plenty of rain and maybe the tree will get washed away but I am doubtful that will happen soon. Back at camp we rested in the shade of our vehicles. Brent setup his stove and and dinner was prepared, excellent Carne Asada, thanks to Stan. Kim and I had to get back for my son's B-Day early the next morning so we said our goodbye's around 8:30Pm. We had an excellent night run down Coyote Cyn. to town never seeing another vehicle. If you can find the opportunity it's really a beautiful time to get out to Anza Borrego.

Loved that stealth off-road sedan, especially the roof carrier.

Nice pics, Scott. Looks like you caught the last of the blooms.

That's me hanging from the rock. ;)

What Scott hasn't mentioned is that she supposedly had been stuck for 3 days before the park rangers or someone else came along and free'd her. Park Ranger Nancy mentioned to us that they had given her some food and water. All she DESPARATELY wanted from us was a cigarette! RFJTOY obliged her. She had NO business being where she was on that trail. How she got to where she was, much less how she was going to proceed out of where she was is a mystery, but she didn't seem concerned. Rangers were going to check the area again after we spoke with Nancy at our campsite in Sheep Canyon about it.

Actually I did mention it but I was still writing as you posted. That was a strange moment rounding the switchback and seeing that lady. Pretty awesome free climbing skills Brent!

Good times!

Cool trip there, Scott! I was thinking about heading up towards Sheep Canyon that day while I was out there. Now I wish I would have. Great pics!
