Just an OLD, NEW member
Greetings all,
In my youth, I did mucho 4x4ing in the local mountains. Today, I have a '95 YJ with a small lift on the 4 banger to run larger tires. My interests have been diverted to my '97 Dodge Dually Diesel with a 30 foot 5th wheel. I'm presently trying to set the 5er up with Ten-Tec 516 HF and 526 VHF rigs. It's hard to take both vehicles out at the same time....hihi. The only thing stopping me from doing what I used to do is my age..... the ol' back is starting to give out so getting high-centered and all alone just don't make for a good day anymore.

Hi Gerry! Welcome aboard. Maybe you could trade in that 30ft 5th wheel for one of those half toy hauler/half travel trailer type 5th wheels and be able to take your Jeep and lodging with you!
Where are you from? Hope to see you on the trail!

Re: Just an OLD, NEW member
Ya know... I originally looked into exactly that prior to purchase of my "Forest River - Sierra" 5er. The major problem was weight and height limitations. A light bar over windshield wouldn't allow entry and the tie-downs inside were not strong enough for me to feel secure. The tail ramps were all too light as well to allow a full-size "Wrangler YJ" into the bay..... I tried while at the lot and parked the Jeep's two front tires midway up the ramp and measured the drop; almost 3 inches!!! The sales staff offered nothing to remedy the situation, either in price or conversion. All the haulers at that time were constructed too flimsy for my taste as well.BlueFJ wrote:Hi Gerry! My trips into Utah, I rented a tandem trailer and pulled the Jeep... much easier and comfortable. After that experience, I now prefer to tote the Jeep rather than drive - I've already replaced one AX5 tranny because of pulling a small utility trailer behind the Jeep with just camping equipment. If I'd known the tranny options on the Wrangler's 2.5 ltr. prior to purchase, I'd opted for the 4 ltr. Tranny conversions for the 2.5 are next to none without breaking the bank.
Much like my radio rig(s), I like doing what I can with as little power necessary to accomplish the task... QRP and a 4 banger, the thrill of accomplishments.
