Montreal, Canada

I was in Montréal last week, and did some exploring with my brother and his wife. All of these shots are from downtown Montréal or from Mount Royal. Which is a mountain on the island of Montréal and from which the city took it name. The mountain is not very high, but it’s the highest point on the island.

Lots of pretty flowers in the park.






Downtown as seen from the overlook. This shot was produced by merging three images into one. It could have been done with one shot and cropped, but the resolution would not have been as good.

This shot is from a different overlook around the other side of the mountain. The bridge you see is Pont Jacques-Cartier.


These are two shots of a staircase in the park. It’s of no particular importance other than it just looks cool.




I’m not sure what building this is, it’s in what is called the “Old Quarter” of downtown Montréal.


This is the outside of the “basilique Notre-Dame de Montréal” There is so much to say about this magnificent building that it would be to hard to put it all in here.

The image where three shots were merged into one, is intriguing. I have that feature on my camera (but have not used it yet) and have seen other such "merges", but not as good as yours. Very nice.

Braden, I love the interior shots of the cathedral, wow! In fact they are all great shots!

The cathedral shots were hard. There is so little light in there. The exposure times are long. I didn't have a tripod, so I "clamped" the camera to the top of a pew with my hands to hold it steady and clicked the shutter.

Even then, only two shots out of about 20 came out good enough to keep. That is a pretty handy technique to keep in mind when shooting a static subject in low light conditions.

The merged shot was done in Post Processing not in camera. The software I used comes with all Canon cameras. It's called ZoomBrowser. But you have to follow some rules when you take the shots. Your camera must be level, you have to overlap the shots, and you have to keep the camera in the same exact spot, in other words rotate it in place, don't slide it to one side as you turn it to take the next shot. I set my camera on the top of the wall, since most walls are built level, and just rotated it in place.

Montréal and Old Montréal are beautiful places. I haven't been there for about 15 years.
