I think I can be ready to test by then. Any recommendations for a good study guide? For me it won't be so much a hobby as getting reliable communications...

You can pick up Gordon West's Technician class study guide at Dirty Parts, Jun's Electrionics, or Ham Radio Outlet store...then go to www.qrz.com to take practice tests 'til you can score 90% plus every time...then get tested !!!
