2009-11-14: Carvacre, Pancake Rock, and Wisecarver

Post by OLLIE » Mon Nov 16, 2009 2:15 pm

I have a few guys I work with who wanted to put their Jeeps through the paces on a quick little half day trip. One guy with a 4-door JK which we recently put a lift on with 35's hadn't gotten a chance to stretch his new springs out yet and was itchin' to do so. :D I couldn't think of a better trail near by than Carvacre/Pancake Rock. I had heard rumors that it has become pretty chewed up. It seems that every time I go up there it gets a little worse for the wear. I think at least 30% of this trail is spent on three wheels. I had to be in Laguna Niguel for a 50th Anniversary Party by 5:00 pm so I wanted to hit the trail early so we could be back out on the pavement by 1:00 pm. I know Frogeye isn't much of a morning bird but I coerced him into tailgunning this run for me. We all agreed to meet at the trailhead at 6:30 am for a fresh start. There were two FJ's, a '97 TJ, and a 2009 4-Door JK. I must say that there is nothing more fun to watch than a new wheeler puting his truck through this type of terrain and seeing the smile on they're face when they go through something that they originally think impossible. :D We did more than we expected to do and ended up back on the pavement by 11:00 am even with the trail being rougher than I have ever seen it. There was no carnage other than some scraping of the bumper on approaches and breakaways. Frogeye and I believe that every time we do this trail it reaffirms that it is THE most fun trail in the near San Diego area. From dirt, to ruts, to rocks, to pinstriping... The only thing missing is sand dunes. The views are amazing as well.

That is a fun trail close to home! Looks like you guys had a good time out there.

Oh, what kind of lift was put on the JK?

We installed a 3" Black Diamond Lift. He also had MIT regear it for the 35's. :)

Man was that fun. Thanks for getting me up early Ollie. I was really impressed with how well Bruce and Dave did. Next time out we are hiking up the peak. Thanks for all the awesome photos too!

I was getting my Jeep ready for Death Valley, would have liked to have met up. I have only done it once in the dark to see the moonrise (which sucks for doing photography). Looks like a fun trail.

Lawson's peak is right there. It would make for a quick little climb/hike up from just passed Pancake Rock.
