Keller Peak Repeater IRLP

I think by now, everyone knows that our Amateur Radio nets are carried on the Keller Peak Repeater. Any ham that lives in the Southern California area, including many parts of San Diego, knows the coverage from this repeater is extensive. Despite this very impressive footprint, it has been our goal, from our first net, to expand our reach well beyond the areas covered by Keller. This goal can be be achieved most efficiently through a system known as IRLP (Internet Radio Linking Project). Once we are hooked up, we will have coverage for much of the South West, including Nevada, Arizona and much more of California. AND, this is just a start.

IRLP however, obviously requires access to the internet. Since there is no hardwired phone service on Keller peak, it has been necessary to get this service via an RF link. Without going into the extensive details of what this requires, suffice it to say that the Keller Board has been struggling with getting internet to the hill for the past many months. With the tireless help of Frank (unwiredadventures), the battle is finally won, but not without a price. The equipment and other expenses necessary to get the RF link functional, has completely depleted their resources.

With the tireless help of Frank (unwiredadventures), the battle is finally won, but not without a price. The equipment and other expenses necessary to get the RF link functional, has completely depleted their resources.

I've been there on the phone to help in my comfortable office, while Dave with repeater association has been on up and down the tower in all kinds of weather to make this work. This is a great group and very worthy of our support. I made out a check today.

I think, "yes" is the answer to your question. IRLP will allow the net to be simultaneously transmitted on any repeater that is connected to Keller, via IRLP. Sorta like a conference call, but a high quality call. Strictly speaking, there will will not be a, "re-broadcast".

Any Repeater that has IRLP will be able to join the conference call.

Echolink repeaters can operate in "conference mode" so multiple Echolink nodes can connect to Keller Peak at once. But IRLP only allows one connection at a time; in order to link more than one IRLP node to Keller Peak, all of the nodes, including Keller Peak, have to connect to an IRLP "reflector". I believe it is customary to obtain permission from the reflector operator before holding a scheduled net on a reflector.

I believe that this is quite true. We already have permission from several repeater owners to add our net to their systems. At the moment, the bottleneck is getting the Keller Peak repeater equipped with IRLP.

We tried to use the repeated for our Big Bear Toyota120 run last weekend but we were told the repeater was being used for some kind of event.

Curious anyone know what event that was?
