2010-08-04 thru 08: Mount Langley Summit

Post by OLLIE » Sat Mar 06, 2010 7:47 am

The first week in August there is a group of us (12 people) that are going to attempt to summit Mount Langley in the south Sierra Nevada Mountain Range.

There are 14 peaks in California that are over 14,000 ft in elevation. Langley is the southern most of those peaks in the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range. Of the 14K peaks, Langley is the second or third hardest to climb depening on whether one attempts the summit via New Army Pass or Old Army Pass to reach the summit. They say New Army Pass is the easiest but it is longer and Old Army Pass is the hardest but it is the shorter route to the summit. We are going to attempt the approach via Old Army Pass and use New Army Pass as the back up plan in the event the Old Army Pass is closed due to snow cover. There is a more extreme rock climbing type approach up the North face of Langley but we won't be attempting that.

My dream is to try and bag all (14 ea) of the 14K+ peaks in California. We will see how I do at elevation and what this does to me. I will use this thread to give you information on what we go through prepping for this trip and itinerary changes, etc. Since this is a high elevation climb we can't just run out and run to the top or we could seriously hurt ourselves. There is a lot of planning and prep to be accompished. We have to acclimatize ourselves to exursion at high elevations and condition ourselves before the date comes. In prep for this we are going to try and bag some aditional peaks between now and then. The three we would ike to bag, in particular, are San Jacinto, San Antonio (Baldy), and San Gorgonio. I will be leading a group up Gorgonio for SummerFest. We need to pick a date to do the other two peaks.

ITINERARY:

Here's the current planned schedule...
Wilderness Permits have been taken care of and campsite reservations made for Whitney Portal.

August 4th (Wednesday):
-Leave San Diego early enough to be to Whitney Portal by noon-ish (~6 hour drive). We will overnight/acclimate at Whitney Portal Campground (8000 ft), eat some good food, maybe hike to Lone Pine Lake, get a good breakfast the next morning then break camp at Whitney Portal.

August 5th (Thursday):
-Leave Whitney Portal Campsite and move to Horseshoe Meadows campsite at the base of Mt. Langley (10,000 ft) for a day of acclamation there.

August 6th (Friday) Wilderness Entry Day as per permit:
-Break camp early, leaving vehicles behind and hike roughly 5 miles to an elevation of 11,000 feet up to Cottonwood Lakes where we will set up our base camp for another day of acclamation there. If a few of us purchase fishing licenses we could catch some trout. Limit is 5 fish a day per person.

August 7th (Saturday) Summit Day:
-Leave base camp with day packs and summit Langley. The summit is about a 4 mile hike with a 3100 ft gain in elevation. Total elevation at the summit is around 14,050 ft. Come back down to base camp to relax for the rest of the day/evening.

August 8th (Sunday):
-Break base camp, hike back down to the vehicles and drive home.

Langley is super fun! The drive up there is killer too! Be prepared, we got a bit of snow on us at the top (end of Aug.) and got rained on pretty hard while coming down the old army pass.

this is the old army pass. It starts at the bottom near the far side of the lake, zags left a ways, then zigs right on the prominent ridge line.

Thanks for those pictures. That's the first real representation I've seen of Old Army Pass. It's such beautiful country up there. How many of the peaks in the Sierras have you bagged?

Thanks!!! I'm going to check into this. This makes for an even more driven approach to summiting peaks.
