Re: Smith & Wesson Sigma 40S&W
Hi Ollie,
The sigma has a spotty reputation. There were some PD's that adopted it and due to problems, reversed their decisions. The trigger pull leaves much to be desired. 40S&W is not my fav caliber. With that said, they can be had for a very reasonable price. If you are happy with it, that is all that matters.
Regards, SSC

Re: Smith & Wesson Sigma 40S&W
My first pistol was a S&W 9mm. Loved the thing to death but money was tight and my wife now where's it on her finger as an engagement/wedding ring. Should have listened to my grandfather. He has always says, "There are two things you should never give up, your guns and your honor; and in that order too." I have always loved S&W and wanted to go to something larger than the 9mm. Although I love 45 caliber, I won't be shooting often enough to bother with something that size. You need to shoot constantly to stay effective with a caliber of that size.

Re: Smith & Wesson Sigma 40S&W
Hey Ollie,
I have shot one of these several times and like it. I also have heard about a bad rep and feel dumb saying that after you already bought it, sorry and dont mean to rain on your parade. I ended up getting a similar model of S&W, a M&P40 compact. Much of it is like the sigma and is is also in 40 which is my favorite caliber. Try some .40 hydro shock and with some practice you'll never miss ( Well I still would, ha ha). Anyways i love these guns and am sure you will have years of fun with it.

Thanks for the reply. You are not raining on my parade. I almost went with the M&P. Have shot one before and enjoyed it. I love Smith and I like shooting 40 S&W. I'm sure I'll like it.Lucrum wrote:Hey Ollie,

My next pistol wil be the Sprinffield Armory XD-40. Probably my favorite on the market but son't have the $$$ right now.
Everyone has their favorite and like SSC stated in his first post, as long as you are comfortable with it then that's all that matters.
An example:
My grandfather (dad's side) had a 22-caliber, single-shot, bolt action rifle. My mom has a 22-caliber, single-shot, lever action she bought at Sears & Robuck when she was in highschool. These rifles were each of their favorites. We were out hunting more times than I can remember and these two would only take their 22's. It was a competition/feud they had going on. Neither one of them could shoot the other's rifle accurately to save their life. But damn if they couldn't nail anything with their own. Even when my grandfather was laying in Hospice care he would still razz my mom about how she needed to take her damn 22 in to get the barrel straightened.

Re: Smith & Wesson Sigma 40S&W
Hi All,
The smith M&P is an improvement in the smith line of pistols. I carried a smith 469 for a number of years and then transitioned to a glock, though my fav pistol is a 1911. Should you wish to give the pistol a work out, give me a shout and I would be happy to take you to an IPSC shoot. Maybe you are familiar with IPSC. If not, it is a lot of fun and will improve your gun handling skills. Six different courses of fire, averaging 26 rounds per stage, mag changes, rapid and accurate shooting.
For self defense, in the 40, hydroshock is old technology. There are other, more advanced rounds for self defense with proven penetration factors, through various obstacles, which offer very good expansion. Good dots, Ranger, DPX are a few. In the same accord, I wouldn't want to get hit with a Hydroshock. Whatever round you choose must be reliable and accurate with your weapon.
