Do you feel the need to have a weapon when camping?

I'm having a hell of a time matching that map to google earth. Is that the area with the ranges at the base of the more difficult trail to Elliot Mine?

Yes it is. You can see that area outside of the red outline, at the far bottom right corner.

I feel the need to have one on me at home, so yes absolutely when camping.

In my opinion most important weapon is situational awareness.

Yes, it is my reasponsibility to defend myself, my family at home and camping.

Last summer while camping at Coyote Flats in the Sierras, while hiking, all of a sudden I heard the rapid movement of paws on the ground not far behind me. They were the unleashed dogs of someone hiking about 150 yards behind me. Very friendly dogs, fortunately. This was a wake up call to me to make sure I have some means of defense and to always be aware of what is around.

Someone I worked with years ago was a winter search and rescue volunteer in local Southern California mountains. He told me that many times he came face to face with packs of wild dogs. Without a way to defend himself, he said he'd probably be dead or seriously maimed.

This sort of thing is happening more and more with so many people abandoning their pets...

As for my position on this topic: I grew up in a house where my mom was deathly afraid of guns, don't know why because she was raised on a farm in Ohio with lots of guns. My mother-in-law was stranded in Germany durning the war and had terrible stories and experiences with the German solders and guns (shooting them off over their head while they stood in check-in lines at the local police/army station and so she was afraid of guns even thought she was married to an Army lifer. Neither one would allow a gun in the house even unloaded. Because of this my wife and I have never owned a gun nor have any desire to own one, but we are both are thankful and appreciate all you that do as well as our neighbors that do. I believe that is why our country has been safe from outside attack for so long, because attackers not only have the military and police to deal with but the citizens. I had to qualify with a 45 and an M16 when in the service and I remember thinking when holding the M16 that this gun was designed to kill another human being. A sobering thought for me.

No, not at all. It's fine, however I usually do have them in their cases behind the seat but didn't have them today.

Is that a Rossi coach gun? I have one and it is fun to play with. One tip, never load two 3inch mag rounds and pull both triggers at the same time.
