P-51 and the Hawk

Post by ssc » Tue May 18, 2010 9:34 pm

Been trying to get some pics of a P51 that flys around. There must have been an airshow and I got lucky. We also have a hawks nest and they have chicks.

Regards, Steve

And a P-38. Very nice.

I used to attend an air show at Brown Field here in San Diego where they had some of those. The P-51 has always been one of my absolute favorite. And the F-4U Corsair. And of course the B-17/24/29 bombers.

I actually met Chuck Yeager there once a long time ago.

The lightning is an interesting plane. I think Big Bear has their airshow in Aug. I am going to try to make it. I have taken the Gold MTN trail up from the lake side and you are above the airport and can take some incredible pictures, because you are above the planes as they fly by and have a background that is beyond words. Might have to plan a trip :D .

I've always loved the Mustang too. Reminds me of my childhood when Chuck Yeager use to fly the 51 and his friend Bob Hover use to fly a twin engine Rockwell Aero Commander at the air show next to my house. Bob would wear a business suit and put a pitcher of water on top of the console and preform loops and roles without spilling a drop. During Bob's internment Chuck was noticeable missing but he later showed up overhead in Mustang doing a series of aerobatics in tribute to Bob. Even though he did it illegally (below the FAA approved limits and without proper permission) the FAA let him slide with a warning.

More than likely from the air show at Chino this weekend. Show was Sunday - they were practicing all week.

One of the P-51's (Lady Alice) is owned by a gentleman in the RC club I belong to (PVMAC), and our main field is just south of Chino. So, needless to say he "just had" to lead all the Mustangs for several flyovers :)

For the record, the P-51 isn't my favorite WWII warbird (many were better planes!), but I won't ever say no to a flyover - or a ride.

Some good pictures from the show here (I didn't take them - I was flying RC on Sunday)

Here is the info I located. However, can you figure out the typo? I am going to put it on my calander. Bring that boat out to Havasu. 8-) A good time by all will be enjoyed.
