Suggestion on Lip Mount Dual Band Antenna

Post by MysticZt4R » Fri Jun 18, 2010 12:00 pm

I currently have a Diamond mag mount on the rig but it's getting to be a pain to unscrew it all the time to get in my garage.

Anyone have any suggestions on a good lip mounted Diamond or Comet PL antenna that folds down easy?

Thanks

The only suggestion from my experience would be a spring loaded antenna that will allow the antenna to bend without damage. There are some motorized units that will allow you to cause the antenna to lie flat at the push of a button and cruiserlarry can add his comments on that unit.

The only downside to a motorized unit is the possibility of forgetting to activate it. The advantage, of course,is that the spring can make up for human error.

I would prefer to stay away from motorized mounts, I have seen several that with a turn of a knob they fold down.

I have the Diamond NR770HB that folds down. It Is the only mobile antenna I have any experiance with, but I like it. Seems to work fine too.

That is my preference as well. On the trail, I usually have enough to keep my attention occupied and it is good to know that my antenna will fold over automatically, especially when my attention is focused elsewhere or when I cannot see exactly how low a branch or other obstacle really is.

I use the Diamond K9000 motorized mount (as does Larry). It is springloaded and takes abuse well. It handles the abuse better than the spring loaded CB antenna and HF antenna. The do make mounts that you get out of the car and pull a collar and they fold over but I'm not sure who makes them or the model numbers.

I have seen these hanging on the the wall at various Truck Stops for truckers to use with their CB's, and have almost grabbed one just to have in my go bag.

I have a Hustler quick disconect unit that I got at HRO that I use on my HF screwdriver whip. With the whip and screwdriver in it's lowest position, 20m, I am just under 13 feet. Set to 80m and I'm over 15 feet tall, ground to tip, and scraping some overpasses.

This antenna folds down. No collar, just lift the antenna and fold. They are very rigid however and will not flex. You will most likely damage either the antenna or the mount if you smack them on a tree, parking garage, etc...

I was looking at something like this but with a fold down option to it.
