A fun way to check your signal and hear yourself as DX!

I used it this evening to check the tuning on my favorite boatanchor amp. At 600 watts I was blaring into the Dutch and Slovenian station on 20m this afternoon. There is some latency involved....enough time for me to pull the headphones aside and listen to myself on the computer speakers. It was interesting to hear what I sound like to European stations.
I also tried two different antennas, the 10-15-20m triband vertical on the roof at 600w and later (evening) the 40m wire over the driveway at about 200w. Both sounded great.
Still intrigued, I pulled the truck up close to the pad so my wireless could feed a signal to my laptop. I tuned the 857/ATAS combo and was pleasantly surprised to hit the same stations just fine on 40m. The mobile was down about one S unit, maybe 1-1/2 depending on modulation. Last winter I had the home shack tore apart while I was rebuilding another SB-200. So, I operated mobile/portable(?) a few times from the driveway. I actually logged quite a few Euro and Russian stations on the mobile and always wondered what the signal level was like....Now I know.

Man, that's pretty interesting. Gonna have to dust off the HF rig and try that at some point!

I still have audio recordings I made of QSOs with my brother several years ago when he was crossing the pacific in a 40 foot sailboat. Recently I turned some into MP3s and sent to him. He was amused to hear how he sounded out in the middle of the ocean.
