first time on the range

Post by smslavin » Sat Oct 30, 2010 8:19 am

Last night I took the basic class up at Iron Sights in Oceanside. We spent a couple of hours in a classroom talking about some of the laws, safety, use of lethal force, etc and then just over an hour on the range. We were given .45 1911s to use along with 50 rounds. First target...

My first shot went high and the next two were a bit low but I think I did well on the remaining 47. I got a bit over zealous with one magazine and tried to be a little faster but they all landed in the 8 ring with one in the 7. After I got through those 50 rounds, there was still about 30 min left in the class so I bought another 50 and a second target. I took my time and concentrated on slow smooth pulls.

I didn't really care for how the 1911 felt in my hand. There was something a bit awkward about it but it could be that it was the first time I've had a firearm in my hands. I've got a few in mind that I'd like to go back and rent but the range has the buddy rule in effect so I'll have to find someone to go with me. Steve, I'd like to come out and spend some time with you as well. I'm trying to find the time to do that.

Overall, I was impressed with the range. Staff was great. Instructor was very knowledgeable. Assistants on the range were very helpful and patient.

I think I have another expensive hobby added to my list. ;)

Guns are fun.

If you guys don't mind having a third person, I'd like to come.

I can bring my .45 HK USP.

I do a bit of shooting down in the Yuha Basin this time of year with a buddy who has an arsenal of small arms: Mossberg 500, .44mag, AR-15, SA1911, Enfield, Mosin-Nagant, and some others. I own a Glock 19, S&W Model 29 (Dirty Harry .44 Mag) and a 1942 La Coruna Mauser 8mm. Anyone is more than welcome to come out and shoot and explore with us. I will post up next time we head out.

I'd love to tag along too, but maybe a spot closer to the OC than to the border could be found? 8-)

Ill check my maps for some good BLM spots further inland. I know that Yuha is a haul for anyone north of San Diego, especially since camping is not recommended down there.

Sean, I look forward to shooting with you. Anyone else is welcome. We can set up a day in The Corona area or Havasu. If anyone would like I can set a specific Sat in Corona and we can have a shootfest. :D I would need to know a number and would have to keep to it. It will also be a day when IPSC will be shot and it is fun to watch and I can even have you shoot a stage. For info see running gun on
http://nrg.jvdynamics.com/nrg/
and http://www.uspsa.org/
If there are any specific requests for guns, I am sure I can fill them. We can have up to 100 guns available to shoot--or more 8-)
Sean, 1911 is a nice gun, but probably not the best gun for your situation. If you come up we will have many 1911's-custom built from mild to wild--comps, dots etc. Also have shotguns. We will make sure you leave with the number of fingers you bring. ;) Safety rules will be taught, enforced for everyone's safety as well as marksmenship and some tactics. Fun and thick skin will also be in full swing. Let me know if anyone is interested and I can then look for good dates.
Did some testing yesterday on our ballistic shields.
Regards, Steve
