What Is That

Post by ssc » Wed Jan 12, 2011 12:58 am

I am standing on the beach taking some pictures. Have a short lens for my seascapes and the telephotos are up in the truck. Waiting for the sun to go down to shoot the pier. Something catches my eye above and beyond the waves. What is it?

I do believe it was a pod of dolphins as I saw numerous spouts and critters. I had to crop the pics of the dolphins and lighten them to see. I have never seen them that close to shore, but have seen sharks that close and closer. A great white was caught just off shore some time ago in that area.

That's cool that you were able to get them on camera.

I've had dolphins swim betwean me and the shore while surfing in oceanside. Ive seen big sharks too but I'd rather remember the dolphins.

I surf with the dolphin pods all the time. Coolest thing ever. I think the most memorable was body surfing on a bigger day and having them pop out of the face of the wave just ahead of me. Scared the poop out of me. Here's a dolphin image I shot years ago in Newport Beach. Bec was uber pregnant with Dillen and we were out for a walk. It made the Surfer Magazine Photo Annual. I have yet to see it happen again and I've been looking.

Having dolphins around is always good karma. Lots of photos with them while swimming in the line up. Seen my fair share of sharks too but they evoke a different emotion for me.

Thanks Steve.

Your pier shot has great lines. A few minutes later and there might have been killer color in those clouds.

Very cool pics.

I've seen them off the coast in Virgina when I was younger. Very cool..
