Corral Canyon & Jacumba Mountains: After Action Reports

Well it turned out to be a great weekend spend with a number of folks here as well as a few from Arizona who had me show them a few of our local trails. We had beautiful weather and scenery, fun trails and a bit of carnage.

A big thanks to Ollie, ralphie, THASALEXUS?, gon2srf, Cammo, and Frogeye for coming out.

To get things started here's the video I got of us recovering a Bronco that had rolled off the side of the shelf-road going down the mountain from the OHV Area.

We can only guess as to what caused this accident. I think if it was speed then he would have gone a lot further. I believe he was drunk and not paying attention to the road because there were no skid marks at all. He wasn't with our group. He walked into our campsite around 8:30. He was very lucky. He had to be better than 150 feet away from the road and he walked away from it with just a hurt shoulder. His Bronco eas even still drivable. When I first saw it my first reaction was that we weren't going to be able make the recovery because of the extreme angles. After assessing it we came up with a plan and with some marginal hiccups we made a clean recovery. It took us about 2 and half hours to get it done. I might do a write up on this recovery and see if see if someone would have done thisd differently or not.

Pics are coming along with mnore video. I'm processing my pics and will have them up by day's end. There were several oops/incidents this weekend. I used my winch twice. That's a record weekend for me. We had a great time. To coin a word that kept coming from Gon2Srf, this weekend was an "EPIC" weekend. :D

Sat. January 15th, 2011: Corral Canyon OHV Area

This trip came about from discussions about this area with Diane, dzJeepChic from Offroad Passport. She had four Jeeps from Arizona staying at the Lake Morena Campground. We met up Saturday morning and figured out what trails to run. Ollie ended up taking a group up Carvacre Road to Pancake Rock and I led the Arizona Jeeps through Sidewinder and Bronco Peak trails.

2011-01-15: Carvacre Run

Post by OLLIE » Mon Jan 17, 2011 12:44 pm

2011-01-15:Carvacre Run

As John stated in his prior post, due to the number of rigs that showed up, He took a group through the Corral Canyon area and I took a group through to Carvacre / Pancake Rock. Saturday was a beautiful day and the fairly clear skies made for some nice views. We had one minor incident during our run when Gon2srf popped a bead on his tire while descending down off of Pancake Rock. We ended up using my rig for support by hooking my winch to him so he could remain stable while he hi-lifted his wheel off the ground to change it while at a very precarious angle. We had a great group on this run. Sammyred (Blue Rubicon), Ralphie, Gon2srf, and Cammo. Frogeyey was waiting for us when we came off the trail so he could follow us back to camp.

My rig tethered to Gon2srf to support him while he changed his tire. Cammo is actually standing up straight while removing the lug-nuts on Gon2srf's spare tire.

We left the trail and headed back to Corral Canyon to make it to Los Pinos lookout tower for sunset. Pics to follow in another thread.

Excellent weekend, good wheeling, good weather, good friends! I'll be posting up some video tonight. Thanks to everyone who came out and John for putting together an "EPIC" trip.

What an awesome run, probably the most fun I've had yet on 4 wheels. Judy was had a little  & :o , but she'll be back for more. These FJs never cease to amuse, I mean amaze me. I did have a twinge of SFA inadequacy when the zonies drove up though. I must say I felt pretty useless for the most part watching you guys do that fantastic trail repair on Scotts rig. What a position to be in! Great job. I learned a lot and see I have some preperation to do before being able to do that in the future. This was also the first run I've been on where everyone was on ham radio...the difference in communications ability & quality is significant to say the least. It was nice not to have to go back & forth to CB. I heard "drop the mike and DRIVE" enough as it was...

One of these days I'll have to figure out how to post pix, I have one or 2 good ones.

On Sunday we all met up again and headed over to Jacumba. We went up to Elliot Mine to show those that had never been there before Elliot Mine and Valley of the Moon. I bailed out while John took the Zonies (as Cammo moniker-ed them) to show them the old Stagecoach Trail north of the I-8.

Here's a little Rody Boa that Frogeye found while scrambling on some boulders. He was safely release back to the wild before we left.
