Forest Aid 2011- Please come!!!

Post by DennisDawg » Wed Dec 15, 2010 8:28 pm

Outdoor Adventure USA
Forest Aid
Angeles National Forest

On Thursday afternoon, August 26, 2009, the Station Fire started in the Angeles National Forest, approximately 4 miles north of the town of La Cañada Flintridge, along the Angeles Crest Highway. The wildfire was determined to be the act of arson, and has the distinction of being the largest fire in Los Angeles County to-date and the 10th largest fire in California since 1933. It caused the deaths of two firefighters as it grew to over 160,000 acres before t was contained on October 16, 2009.
Today the campgrounds, mountains and roadsides all show the scars of the fire’s destruction. It will be many years if not decades for those scars to no longer dominate the landscape. The forest will in many places recover naturally but in others it very much needs our help!

The Tree People and Angeles National Forest are working to correct that by planting trees as part of Forest Aid! The tree planting is a continuation of successful efforts for two years in San Bernardino National forest where approximately 50,000 trees were planted by Forest Aid. Over all the forest Service believes 1.5 million trees need to be planted in the Station Fire area of which 75,000 will be done as part of Forest Aid.

This is where you can help!! After trading PMs with Dave, we picked a date and are asking you to sign up and come help plant trees. The work is not hard. All tools, hardhats and gloves are provided along with instruction and supervision. You should plan on showing up at around 8:30 AM and being done planting by about 1 PM. You should bring water and a snack, wear hard soled shoes and appropriate clothing for the mountains.

Dennis:

This is a good cause. If you remind us of the specific dates, about 30-45 days from the event, we will place it our the OAUSA calendar, and others, so that we can generate additional interest.

That would be wonderful! If you think all of you might like to come up as a group, that can be arranged as well. Then you’d all work together, and enjoy the time as a team.

If there is anything I can do to help you all get up there, please let me know.

It is a very fun way to spend the day. There are many weekends to choose from, or even weekdays for groups of any kind.

Basically they’ll be planting every weekend that weather permits from March to May.

I will remind you all for sure!!!

Thank you!!!

Yes, they are great fun and that is an important part of the effort. You can bring your family and friends and know that though you’ll work, you’ll have fun!

For the last two years the efforts were directed in Arrowhead and then higher north of Fawnskin as the conditions allowed. There were shuttles to the planting areas and all of that.

The good news there is most of those trees are doing really well!!!

This year may prove easier for people to access in Angeles National forest in the Station Fire area. This will be above La Canada, up Hwy 2 and such.
It will be rewarding and fun for sure!!!

Everything there is to know is here: http://www.forestaid.net/

Individuals can sign up there.

Basically folks sign up, show up and check in, get grouped, get a little talk about how much we appreciate their help (because we do), get hardhats and gloves, then instruction on how to plant the little trees and use the tools . . . then off to plant!

I have not planted in Angeles National Forest before but because much of the burn the area is more assessable then those I assisted in planting in San Bernardino National Forest, though I may not know all the details, I know it will be easier for volunteers . . . meaning, it is really easy and the Tree People will take care of everyone. They run a great event!!!

If you have a group of more than 10 you can sign up as a group: http://www.forestaid.net/volunteer-group
