Interesting article - Consumer reports reviews vehicle models that have major re-designs, including the new Toyota 4Runner. I have worked on both, know folks who own both, and have heard criticisms of both...so while I don't think CR is the authority on off-road vehicles, they did make many interesting observations - and I hope Toyota pays attention:

Re: Toyota 4Runner 4th Gen better than 5th Gen - Consumer Report
I could have told you that. I love my 4th gen 4runner. It has seen Big Bear, Moab, Ouray, AB, Rubicon and many trails in Tahoe, Bishop etc. It is stock except for tires. It is my wifes DD and after I sold my jeep, we used it for trails. After putting a nasty scratch in the rear fender on the rubicon, the wife said time to buy another dedicated rig, hence the FJ. I luv the v-8 and have tried to get the wife to give it to me to set up for trails. No dice. Offered a lexus--no. We went to the Toyota dealer to look at the new 4Runner and what a let down. The wife looked at me and said, " you must be kidding me." And of course, no V-8. It has some advantages over the FJ:
V-8;
visibility;
room;
working back doors;
narrower;
creeps better in 4-lo;
more convienent interior;
turning radius;
V-8
FJ has a few things over the 4runner:
aftermarket;
length;
spare tire placement;
unique;
seat comfort;
angles.
Did I mention the 4runner has a V-8.
Cheers, Steve
