Communications

Plan for the Expedition here. Not an OAUSA sanctioned run.

Communications

Post by DaveK » Tue Jan 11, 2011 3:00 pm

Communications in the GSE will require some special preparations. For the most part, there will be no cell phone coverage and due to the remoteness of the area, there are no facilities including wired phone service. To the extent that we will need to communicate with family or friends or for emergencies, we will need to bring the necessary radios and devices that will give us this ability.

For those interested, we will be running APRS, HF radios, HF Airmail, and Satellite internet.

Initially, we will be working on an HF APRS set-up for those interested in some long range APRS contacts. If you are looking to get started with APRS, just want to tune up your system, or want to set up an HF APRS station, we will be getting together for a meeting or two to get things rolling.

Please use this thread to post or correct your APRS SSID. We will create a "find me" link for each APRS user.

I will have 2m APRS with SSID KI6JFU-4 in my vehicle. If there is any interest, I will bring portable 2m APRS units with SSIDs of KI6JFU-1 and -2. I'm playing around with a 2m simplex APRS setup that tracks the vehicles in a group on moving maps using OziExplorer or Overland Navigator. Maybe I'll use this trip as motivation to get my general license!
Time to stop talking about it and just go do it!

I've been thinking the same thing.

My SSID show above is correct.

Your timing couldn't be better. OAUSA will be offering all levels of testing at our next Meet & Greet on March 19, 2011 (about 2 months away.) The location will be the Bass Pro Shops in Rancho Cucamonga. We will post details shortly.

Study up!

We will have HF stations running most every night on the trip. Now is as good a time as any to set up a contact schedule. Any takers? Randy?

There are two IRLP nodes near the GSE. I have contacted the owner of one which is located on the southern boundary of the Monument and he has given us permission to use the node to connect to the OAUSA nets. It is located at about 4100 feet agl and depending on where we are, we may be able to tune into the net(s). Bring your Elk antennas

We need a list of repeaters that cover the GSE area. Hector, I seem to recall that you had a directory of some sort. Anyone else?

Kanab, Panguitch and Page appear to have repeaters.
