2011-04-09: Otay Mtn Snow

Post by OLLIE » Mon Apr 11, 2011 11:59 am

Late Friday night I got a call from a friend asking if I thought Otay would be passable Saturday morning. He just bought a 2 Door 2011 JK Wrangler Sport and wanted to try it out. With all the rain we had last week I knew it would be soupy in spots but thought we'd be OK. So, not knowing what to expect, we recruited Skytrax and met early Saturday morning for a short half day run. It was one of the craziest Otay Quickie runs I've experienced. We had sunshine, rain, mud, water crossings, and can you believe snow? When we got within a mile of the top, the clouds started to pull away and there was snow capping Otay. My friends, nor I, had ever seen that before. It was surreal. The chances of seeing that again are slim. Here are a few of the pictures I took.

Not sure the elevation on Otay, but when Ian and I came down on Sat. morning, there was snow down to Viejas, at 2500 feet. We only got about 3 or 4 inches, since most blew away.

We hit snow at 3200 feet. Otay peak is at 3600.
