Panamint City Hike Report

Just got back from a hike up Surprise Cyn into Panamint City Ghost Town. I've been wanting to make this hike for a long time. Just never really been in shape to do it. Well, fret no longer.. i made a date and accomplished it whether i was ready or not. I will go ahead and pat myself on the back since #1, i don't hike hardly at all. and #2 i've never even worn a pack. Basically this was my virgin multi-day hike. Im so stoked to have made it and now im hooked and want to hike to more remote destinations. Really gives you a sense of accomplishment that you can only understand when you don't drive right up to the location.

Anyhow, here's the trip report.. enjoy.. i know i did. :wings:

Awesome! I've been waiting for this one. Great report. Makes me want to get up there myself.

Its such a shame that vehicles are no longer allowed up Surprise Canyon. That would be an amazing run. Its also sad that its only a matter of time until the smelter stack falls down...

Great write up as usual Dave. Glad to see you're starting to get out there on foot too. It brings a different sense of invigoration and accomplishment than using four wheels. I love it.

Great writeup Dave. Looks like a great trip.

A friend recently loaned me a videotape of one of the last runs up Surpise Canyon before it closed. Shot by my friend, it shows a group of about 10 vehicles, led by Marlin K. of Marlin Crawler going up and down the canyon with water flowing in the creek. Fascinating viewing. Marlin is spotting most of the trucks nearly the whole way. Really tough wheeling.
