Interesting Little RV

Post by OLLIE » Wed May 18, 2011 1:48 pm

I have been driving by this vehicle for the last year or so and it has always intrigued me. I finally stopped today to get some pics while doing a supply run. It parks by the Chula Vista Marina. My guess is that it is owned by someone that lives on their boat in the marina or in the RV park right near there. It is filled with all kinds of water sports gear (boogie boards, wet suits, surf boards on roof, etc.) Anybody know what it is? I'm baffled.

Looks like a late model Citroen Fourgonnette.

Yep AKA a 2vc. I have never seen the truck model in the US before. I rode in the in the back seat of a 2vc from Rome Italy to Bonn Germany. One of the greatest road trips of my life. There is a great scene in a James Bond movie of Bond taking a shortcut and driving a 2VC down some mountain switchbacks. Off roading in a 2VC.

Actually, a "2CV" or "deux cheveau". Of all people.....you're forgetting the famous scenes of Wingnut and Pat in ES2 as they made a blindingly fast trip across France. That's where I learned of this "Rocket on Rails"....never been in one.

The Citroen 2CV was very popular in the late 60's early 70's here as a sort of "kit" car...You couldn't legally buy one in the US (no safety features or emissions goodies), but some clever folks realized how easy it was to disassemble...so they started sending them here in pieces, to be assembled as a "kit" car, and bypassing stricter regulations...Unfortunately, the Govt caught on after a while, and that was that.

Having had a couple of larger Citroens (69 DS19 and 71 DS21 Palais), I can say they were amazing, but unusual cars. The big Citroens had the finest street ride of any vehicle in existence with their hydro-pneumatic suspension, they were definitely strange beasts. Maserati got involved later, too, with the mid '70s Citroen SM, also a popular cult vehicle among those with a larger pocketbooks.

The 2CV was barely a car, IMO, with it's tiny 2 cylinder engine, fold down windows, and lack of any features whatsoever, but was very popular in Europe because it was reliable, agile, and cheap...

LOL. Thats the only thing I think of when I hear Deluex Cheveau. Not to hijack the thread, but on the subject of the Brown legacy... Dana has an awesome movie out called From Dust to Glory about the Baja 1000.

I stand corrected, 2CV, it was 25 years ago. ES2 was a great movie, forgot about that. Being in one is similar to riding in a sealed tuna can on wheels, at least the rag top opened it up a bit.

That must've been a heck of a trip. Did you have to do any mountain roads or an autobahn?...cuz, that would pucker things a bit.
