So I bought my first ever 12 Gauge Shotgun! It's a 12 Gauge Escort for just $219.00! Wow! I could not resist!

And then I started to study the best 12 gauge ammo for home defense, and I found this site below.

Some misconceptions may exist regarding the spread of shotgun pellets or balls. It is not enough to merely point the shotgun in the general direction of an assailant and let fly. Birdshot or buckshot does not create a huge cone of death and destruction that devastates everything in its path. Rather, for a defense or "riot" shotgun with an 18- to 20-inch open choked "improved cylinder" barrel, the pellets will spread out about one inch for every yard of range traveled.

Across a large room of 18 feet or so, the spread will only be about 6 inches, a circle as big as a coffee cup saucer. At 50 feet, the spread will only be about 16 inches, the size of a large pizza. It is obvious from this information that a shotgun blast will not incapacitate multiple assailants at close range."

I disagree with many aspects of what is contained in the quotes, but that is another topic.

In regards to your specific request, I do not have a one size fits all response. I always have at least one and many times, two handguns. Depending on where I am going and what I am doing will cause me to decide what handguns I pack and the ammo is somewhat universal. In 9mm, speer golddot 124+P and at least three extra mags. If .45acp, corbon 185+P DPX with 3 extra mags, including golddot's in 230 flavor. 10mm, golddot proload 180 grain. I like bonded/homogeneous bullets as they offer better and more consistent penetration. This to me is a good thing for both 2 and 4 legged critters. Back when I used to hunt with revolvers--and practice with them-- I always had a .44mag. However, I doubt I could hit the side of a barn now due to very little practice, but in some situation, a .44 may be in my pack.

Regarding shotguns, I usually have one in the rig. Rarely will I carry the benelli as I prefer the simplicity of the Mossy 500 pump. I prefer slugs for the penetration. I see the shotty as an animal issue gun so I want max penetration. I agree with Eric on OO and number 4 buck and I usually will have some birdshot for snakes. The problem with the shotty is that it is a bit slow to load and not as readily available, unless stopped and camped and kept close by.

Regarding rifles, I generally have one and sometimes two. If push comes to shove, I prefer the rifle over the shotty. In CA, my general rifle is the mini 14 with a few mags loaded. My favorite load is the corbon 62 gr DPX or partition. I usually have some M193 and SS109 loaded as well. Outside of CA, it is an M4--which I highly prefer. I also carry my 30-06 on a regular basis loaded with 180 grain Fed Premium partitions.

I have a Winchester 1300 12 gauge I keep in my tent while camping. Though, its primary use is for hunting. For day trips I'll bring along my Marlin 1894 Cowboy .357 lever action rifle. I also have a Taurus revolver in the same caliber.

Besides protection, its great just getting out to do some target shooting.
