Thanks Larry. I guess it's call an AFM or Air Flow Meter on my year. Looks like what i did is a common mistake rookies make who are not familiar with Toyotas wire clip connnectors.

I have a line on a used one for $140.00 from the same guy I bought the motor but I am going to try and solder it back together tonight as it seems a simple fix.
You'll have to take the VAF out, cut the sealant around the black cap and then there will probably three prongs in there that attach to a circuit board which will have to be resoldered carefully. I had my mechanic do it for $25 and then everything worked again.

While it ran the motor sounded do damn good, rock solid. What a lot of work this has been but also a great learning experience and now I own an engine hoist and stand and some really long half inch extension for reaching the most difficult awkwardly place bell housing bolts ever. :D :D

Yep, that's exactly what I did. Luckily I found one at the Otay wrecking yard for $100.

I have my old damaged one if you want it. I can bring it to summerfest. Maybe you can repair it.

You may want to cross-reference part numbers, but the 91-92 FJ80 (3FE motor) and the 93-94 FZJ80 (1FZ-FE) has that MAF as well. It may be the same part.

Thanks for the offer Eric. If I manage to fix mine I'll be happy to fix yours as well so you have it as a spare. I'll be in Idyllwild this weekend for Kim and my 22nd anniversery. Have fun. :D

Careful when soldering the MAF or AFM....the actual sensor monitors heat...if the solder or soldering iron get it too hot, it will destroy the sensor, whether the wires are connected or not :o

And Happy 22nd Anniversary to you and Kim :D

If it's any thing like thr air flow meter my old BMW has, then it's a potentiometer in side. Basically there is flap that sits in the middle of the air flow, as more air flows through the air pushes that falp, that inturn moves the potentiometer. This is how the ECU gets the air reading going into the motor. The potentiometer is housed inside that sealed black cover.

It's running perfectly! I was very care to melt the solder on the iron itself and dab just enough on the connections. I think it will take a while before I feel that the connections are going to hold!

Thanks Larry we are going to Open Sesame in Belmont Shores for dinner and then a Gondola ride. Saturday we're off to Idyllwild to camp for the weekend. I hope you guys have a great time in Big Bear.

Thank you Eric, you lead me to my mistake and I was able to fix it with a few well placed spots of solder. I am so happy, the new engine sounds great.
