November 17, 2011 - Desert Magazine

Post by DaveK » Wed Nov 16, 2011 10:32 pm

The Southwestern Desert is one of the most spectacular and beautiful places anywhere. Over the years, there have been untold publications which have showcased the desert, but few have done as well as "The Desert Magazine". From 1937 to about 1993, this monthly magazine contained some of the very finest articles covering our deserts and for those who were not privileged to have experienced each issue, they are now available, online, FOR FREE!

Our net this week will be a discussion of this terrific magazine, including information on how it changed, what it covered, and how to get the most from it. If you enjoy the desert, there is no better source to help you plan your next trip or many trips in the future.

You can visit the website at http://www.dezertmagazine.com/old-desert-magazine.

looks like a great magazine, unfortunately, I don't think I will make the net tonight. If someone could get me a courtesy check in I would appreciate it, and hopefully some of what I miss will end up here.

I just bought a copy of the DM Index. Send me a PM if you would like me to look something up.

Tim, where did you get the index? I bought the complete set on DVDs from http://www.mydesertmagazine.com, but the index is not included and according to them needs "a lot of cleaning up and will be towards the latter part of the year.... but is not included at this time".

I am interested in getting a copy of the index.

I found it online at a bookstore in Yucca Valley, CA. It was new and was listed at $125. I dealed and got them down to $100 cash. I picked it up on Thanksgiving weekend. It is a great resource. I had the idea that I might take it apart and scan it to pdf and make it searchable. I dropped that idea because of the cost of the book. It's great to browse throught and find all sorts of interesting topics, as well as find all the info available on a topic of interest. When they have the digital version of the index, it would be a great thing to have. As I said before, contact me if you want me to look something up.
