January 5, 2012 - Desert Destinations

Post by DaveK » Thu Jan 05, 2012 12:16 pm

Tonight's net will include a discussion of new and interesting desert destinations.

For those interested in getting to know our local deserts better, there are several books by the late Bill Mann which describe unique and fascinating sites in the deserts of California. Also, the Bureau of Land Management (the BLM) administers large portions of the Deserts in the Southwest and they maintain a great deal of information on these areas as well as maps. With a little luck, we will discuss articles which have appeared in Desert Magazine (now defunct).

Join us with your favorite spots.

Here are the details about the Quartzsite hamfest and 4x4 run that I mentioned during the net:

1. There is a hamfest in Quartzsite, AZ from 1/21/2012 to 1/28/2012. Here is a link to info about the hamfest: http://quartzfest.org/php/main.php?home

2. In conjunction with the hamfest, the 4x4 Ham club from Phoenix will be running the Dripping Springs Trail on Saturday, January 21. The meeting point is the Mobil Station in Quartzsite (I-10 exit 17) at 10:00 am MST (9:00 am PST). They will be camping out in the Quartzsite area on Saturday night. Here is a link to info about the run: http://www.4x4ham.com/showthread.php?14 ... 01-21-2012

Notes for January 5, 2012 - Desert Destinations

Here are the notes I used for tonight's net. I've included the references to the back issues of Desert Magazine.

There are many interesting places in the KOFA and Bradshaw Trail areas that weren't discussed. Try a Google search on the names and you'll find a lot more info!

Time to stop talking about it and just go do it!
