That is an awesome set-up, DominicG, with the awning and the roof top tent.

I have the small ARB Touring awning, which appears to be identical to the Camping Labs stuff (except they don't have the smaller one available, and they have a better price :o ), and I love having it in the desert.

I've been considering their roof top tent, but I was concerned about being able to pack up and go quickly. I was also concerned about the extra 120 lbs sitting up on the roof, considering I usually bring at least two 10g fuel cans and two 10g water cans up there (about 150lbs or so in liquids). In addition, the tent would sit higher because I have a Gobi Ranger rack, rather than the ARB Touring rack set up for the tent.

Let me know how your FJC handles, trail-wise and clearance-wise, with the tent up top...

I had a chance to compare the Camping Lab and ARB RTT's this week in Ouray. Both mattmainster and MudLovingFJ had the CL RTT's on Skersfan built trailers. They are about 95% the same. Their are 3 differences, Color, the cover, and the entrance setup. The ARB cover is thicker, and just feels like it's better quality. Also, the ARB (as you can see in one of the pics above) has a the possibility of an enclosed entrance, where the CL does not. ARB: $1410 through sierra expedition. Camping lab $800 through CL (and its virtually the same tent built by the same manufacturer).

The weight. Yeah it's heavy, and almost impossible to mount and remove by yourself. But wheeling, the weight has not affected me. I have gone all out through the desert high speed, getting completely sideways, and all the off camber stuff and have not really noticed it... I usually forget it is there until i see low hanging tree limbs and such  The clearance has not been a problem yet though.. i just fear ripping $1400 off my roof ;)

The Camping Lab has an enclosure for the overhang of the tent. The ladder is outside of the enclosure. Josh and Heidi had it on there tent. I watched them put it up. Very quick and easy.

As much as i come to not like the design, i'm going to keep it.

The shade it provides is pretty nice.
