Here are some more book recommendations -
Four-Wheeler's Bible by Jim Allen
Motorbooks.com
It even has some pictures of my favorite Austrian built 4x4 so it can't be all bad
Any of the BIll Mann's Guides
Shortfuse Publishing Co., Barstow, CA
http://desertmapandaerial.com/shop/cate ... ml?pse=apq
Any of the Roger Mitchell Guides
Track and Trail Publishing, Oakhurst, CA
http://trackandtrailpublications.com/Ta ... tions.html
The Mining Camps Speak, "A New Way to Explore the Ghost Towns of the American West"
Beth and Bill Sagstetter
Bench Mark Publishing of Colorado
http://www.amazon.com/Mining-Camps-Spea ... 0964582414
This is a great book for learning how to identify and understand the use of artifacts you may find in old ghost towns.
California Trail Users Coalition - CTUC Maps
http://www.ctuc.info/ctuc/index.php/maps
A great place to see lots of obscure books on the Mojave Desert, Owens Valley, and Death Valley is Jawbone Station.
The store is run by the Friends of Jawbone -
http://www.jawbone.org/foj/
They have many of their books and maps available on-line -
http://www.jawbone.org/foj/index.php?op ... Itemid=160
Jawbone Station is located just off of State Highway 14 on Jawbone Canyon Road about 19 miles north of Mojave. Turn onto Jawbone Canyon Road then make an immediate right at the first drive. This is a great place to stop and take a break when driving through to see what new books and maps they have in stock. Note that this is NOT the Jawbone Canyon Store which is located on the west side of hwy 14 just south of Jawbone Canyon Road. Many people get the two confused as Jawbone Station sits back off of Hwy 14 and is easily missed when driving by.

The ARRL Repeater guide is an excellent resource but another and generally more up to date source is the repeaterbook.com site.
For cooking I recommend Dutch oven cooking for dummies and for cooking in general the good eats series by Alton Brown is a fun and well presented book on the theory and application of cooking techniques that translate well to the outdoors.
