First Time Checking In

Post by rjo » Wed Oct 31, 2012 12:36 pm

Howdy folks!

I just got back from a solo trip up Goler Wash last weekend and after years of soloing out there decided it was time I got connected to the community!

One thing that inspired me to post and start meeting people was the situation at Mengel Pass. I've been up and down there so many times and never had an issue but this last trip it was just a mess. I hadn't heard about the August storm that tore everything up and man it turned the boulder run into a much more challenging drive. Being alone I decided it was unwise to attempt it and had to back out. I was bummed!

Do any groups ever get out there and do maintenance on such obstacles to bring them back into some kind of workable state or do we just leave them alone and wait for nature to make em right again? Seems it could be a while before that feature can be done in a stock vehicle again.

Glad to be here and hope to make some contacts to hit the trails with!

Robert

Welcome to OAUSA!

I'm not familiar with Death Valley. Perhaps someone in the know can answer your question.

Robert:

Welcome to OAUSA.

Tom is our resident Death Valley expert (just having returned from his annual trip there) and he should be checking in soon.

Hey Larry! I need to get over there and get some lights ... that trip was the first time I *really* needed them!

Howdy Davek ... I'll look forward to hearing Tom's observations.

Traveltoad, I had a gopro running during the night but like an idiot I didn't walk it down there in the morning . I didn't find Goler messed up too bad, or at least not in a bad way since the waterfall at the beginning of the trail is nicely buried in mud now as if its not even there ..

There was a small gorge that got cut across the trail a few miles up, but a path around it has already been bushwhacked.

Does the park service even let folks do backcountry maintenance or is that a whole bunch of bs and redtape?

Well the Death Valley website is not showing any road closures (http://www.nps.gov/deva/index.htm or on their Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/DeathValleyNP). I am going to Death Valley on the 14th to Furnace Creek for 3 days. I might leave early and go through Ridgecrest and stay at Wildrose then travel to Furnace Creek via Golar wash and Mengel Pass. If I do I will upload a photos. If you have a Facebook account you can "like" -> https://www.facebook.com/pages/PhotoJee ... 7006356560 or search for "PhotoJeeper".
