Julian/Cuyamaca Mine Run/hike - Saturday 10/19/13
Re: Julian/Cuyamaca Mine Run/hike - Saturday 10/19/13
This will be the first OAUSA trip for my wife, Cathy and me. We're looking forward to hearing about the mines Friday evening, and then seeing them on Saturday. Please add us to the list for this run. Thanks. Looking forward to having a great time and upgrading to Extra.

Please add Chris Schafer to the waiting list. A stock LR3 would do fine on this run with a good spotter, right?
(I remember a certain stock Disco keeping up...

A stock LR3 will do just fine. I'll be on the look out for a good spotter!
We have a new mine this year that you haven't seen. Just an FYI!

NOTICE
We are at full for this trip. If any one else wants to join, please let us know. One way or another, we can get a few more in. If anyone has some spare room in their vehicle, that will help.
For those attending this run, please review my recommendations above in post #1. Also, please note the following"
-bring a flashlight for everyone in your group and make sure the batteries are fresh (a headlamp will be the best choice).
-boots and long pants are advisable
-bring a good quality pair of leather gloves
-bring your camera
-bring a lunch and plenty of water
-see me as early on Friday as you can so we can get you inspected and get the paperwork completed. My rig is hard to miss - large green Hummer.
NOTE: we will need to leave camp at 8:00AM sharp to meet the mine owner at the first stop.
Welcome everyone.

Good to know, thanks. There's a good chance we'll be riding passenger with Chris, depends on how the other Saturday runs look.DaveK wrote:Chazz

Any recommendations on boots/waders that won't break the bank? I'm very accustom to hiking boots but none of my inventory allows for wading through a foot of water. How long will we have to wade through the water? Any stores you recommend? Thanks ahead of time for the advice!

The cave is a few hundred yards long but the amount of time spent in water will depend on how much rain the area received during the year. Total mine time won't be more then 20-30 minutes.
There are a few of options for shoes:
1. Get your regular shoes and pants wet and dry out later (not recommended).
2. Use your fishing waders, if you have them. But that's an option that's a little pricy if you don't.
3. The option that I am considering, at the moment, is a shoe called the Five Fingers. I've seen them on Ebay for less than $20. I used a pair on a recent river rafting trip and they worked well for raft use and moderate hiking. Here is a picture:

You could look for a pretty cheap utility/rain boot like these:

You can probably find something like that local and not have to pay shipping. I don't know if the mine with the water is the one with a little hike/climb up to it, don't know how well these would work for that.
