OAUSA Net - 11/ 21/13 - CA Legislative Update re Firearms

Post by DaveK » Thu Nov 21, 2013 3:22 pm

2013 was a very busy year for the California State legislature in terms of firearm and hunting legislation. In total, there were over 50 bills that were generated out of the Assembly and the Senate. Many of these bills made their way to the Governor's desk. Join us this Thursday for a discussion of what made it and what didn't. Check this link for a complete listing of all of these bills: http://www.crpa.org/2013-bill-status-update/

Here are some links to the actual bills and the new laws that will hit the books soon:

1. AB 48 (Conversion kit ban on high cap mags): http://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces ... 320140AB48
2. AB 711 (Ban on use of lead ammo for all hunting): http://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces ... 20140AB711
3. SB 363 (Criminal penalties relating to unsafe storage of forearms): http://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces ... 20140SB363
4. AB 231 (Criminal penalties relating to unsafe storage of forearms): http://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces ... 20140AB231
5. SB 127 (Requires psychotherapist to report threats of violence by patient): http://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces ... 20140SB127

With all of these new laws soon to hit the books, I am reminded of the age old legal axiom that "ignorance of the law is no excuse". For an interesting perspective on this, see the following article, entitled "Ignorance of the Law Is No Excuse, But It Is Reality", By Paul Rosenzweig, (http://www.heritage.org/research/report ... is-reality). Don't be put off by its length. It is worth your time to read it in its entirety!

PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT

The spotlight this week is on a compact and heavy duty camp table sold by Cabela's. Whether you camp in established campgrounds or prefer dispersed camping, there is always a need for additional table space. The table comes handy, especially when we need to make camp where there are no facilities. It sets up and takes down quickly and stores in a compact bag (included). It also has telescoping legs, making it easier to use as a cook station. It has served us well now for over 5 years and, so far, no breakage or damage, despite hard use. See Cabelas: http://www.cabelas.com/product/Cabelas- ... 732495.uts.

Note: Go for the larger size table - you won't regret the choice.

Lead-Free bullet manufactures are out there and gaining momentum. Finding a good load when any of the components change presents a logistical wrinkle in your favorite...well...anything, not just reloading. Suggest you look at, while it is still legal to do so in CA, ordering from Midway USA for reloading components. I have found them to be reasonable in many aspects of their business. Cost, for one, is a big factor along with reasonable shipping rates. They usually have a good supply of stuff when other avenues of procurement have dried up. There are other folks out there but as I said, this is a good place to start. http://www.midwayusa.com/

To reload or not to reload...that continues to be the question. Get those premium rounds you desire for a fraction of the cost by putting the money up front for the equipment and then turn out those tailored rounds that meet the requirements of the new law AB 711.

Lead Free projectile manufactures:
Hornady GMX http://www.hornady.com/store/GMX
Nosler E-tip http://www.nosler.com/e-tip
Barnes Bullets http://www.barnesbullets.com/
Speer http://www.speer-bullets.com/products/r ... t/tnt.aspx
Cheaper than Dirt http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/prod/Cop ... rojectiles
Magtech http://www.magtechammunition.com/sitepages/pid103.php
General http://www.generalbullet.com/

There is a bunch of them, just do some searching and you'll get what you want but it is like starting all over again with those favorite rounds for favorite firearms.

Midway is one of the very best suppliers of shooting supplies. It's nice to see that their inventory is slowly starting to catch up with demand.
