OAUSA Net - March 13, 2014 - Vehicle Maintenance
You use your vehicle hard and often wind up in some pretty remote locations. Getting stuck a long way from a decent repair shop can end a good trip in a hurry, not to mention, becoming very expensive. Proper maintenance of your 4WD goes a long way toward getting you to your destination and back safely and without major towing and repair expenses. Join Tom, KI6FHA, this week for a discussion of vehicle maintenance recommendations. Anyone with experience maintaining your off-road vehicle should join the group. All input is welcome!!!

In keeping with this weeks net topic, we are spotlighting a product that every one who works on their vehicle should have - good disposable gloves. There is just no getting around the fact that maintaining your vehicle is dirty work, from changing the oil to lubing those impossible-to-reach zirks. Aside from being difficult to clean up, the lubricants, solvents and chemicals that you use can be toxic.
How do you keep your hands clean???...................a good pair of disposable latex or nitrile gloves. Your garage and your vehicle should have several sets and they should last for more than a couple of minutes. Sure, you can save a lot of money buying the cheap stuff, but they don't protect well and they don't last very long. There are many good brands out there, but the best I have found were recommended to me by my favorite mechanic. He is able to use a single pair, usually for several days.
I bought a box about a year ago and still have a few pairs left. The brand is "Life Guard" (http://lifeguardgloves.com/) and they make several varieties. The model I have been using is #1244 - extra long, 14 mils thick, and textured.
This is the product (from the Life Guard website).

Thanks Dave, tonight I won't be able to make it to the net, so I'll ask here, how do these gloves work for first aid, are they thin enough to get a feel?

To a large degree, it will depend on how sensitive your fingers are to begin with and how sensitive you need them to be with gloves on. Admittedly, these gloves are relatively thick and for very sensitive work, it may present a problem. For working on a vehicle, that thickness is a benefit. Although these particular gloves are labeled, "Medical Examination Gloves", I should note that they are NOT sterile, which may be significant, depending on your anticipated uses. Life Guard makes a very wide range selection of disposal gloves and they will have something that will fit your needs.
If you will be attending either the Radios in the Park or the Redondo Meet & Greet, I will have a pair that you can check out. Hope this helps.

In case someone besides me needs some help picking the right glove. I am always confused about it because I may not be allergic, but there may be others who can't tolerate latex. I tend to buy a box and put them in various kits as personal protective equipment (go bag, medical kit, etc.).
H-U-A or "Hooah!" = Heard Understood & Acknowledged. In context: "Roger that sir, HUA!"
