OAUSA Net – May 22, 2014 – More Ammunition Handloading

Well....................after several delays, it finally looks like we might be able to do our ammunition handloading net, but, we need to add one note of caution. It seems that Southern California Edison (who supplies electricity to the repeater we use for the nets), is conducting some "routine" repair or maintenance work and, yes, you guessed it - it will be all day Thursday and possibly into the evening. While this work is being performed, ALL power to the repeater will be shut down and that means no echolink or IRLP. So if we are not on the air or if things shut down unexpectedly, send your thanks to SCE.

Last April and December we had several nets on ammunition handloading. We only had time for a broad overview of the steps and equipment used in the process.

Our general outline for these nets includes:

2. Equipment and safe conditions for handloading

4. Learning sources - how to get started
5. Safety and common sense

For this next net we would like to do a quick refresher and then dive into more details and answer questions. Most importantly, we would encourage questions, tips, suggestions and equipment recommendations. Also we have some new products to spotlight.

PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT

Since this weeks net is on a firearms related topic, I thought it would be a perfect opportunity to spotlight a product I discovered many years ago, but which was brought to my attention recently by Mike Spivak, KJ6BB. Whether you hand load for pistols or rifles, sooner or later it will become necessary to remove a stuck case from your reloading press. The process for removing the case is pretty straight forward and easy, but the job is impossible unless you have the right equipment. Mike sent us the following information on the RCBS remover kit.

I have a Lyman cleaner I got as a kit with the tank and two bottles of concentrate cleaner; one bottle for parts and the other for brass. So far I am still learning the capabilities but I have used and like the liquid cleaners that are available for use without a tumbler or u-sonic cleaner. Birchwood Casey used to do a good job but I found that it is not shipped to CA in some sites. Don't know what the problem is but it is an alternative that can be used instead of buying a tumbler or u-sonic cleaner. Not a bad start for a beginner to wash their brass as necessary.

Good information. I take it that you prefer the ultrasonic cleaners to the dry media tumblers, for brass.

I have found that cleaning solutions get the job done but I have not yet perfected any technique so I am okay with tumbling and I'm just getting started in the liquid and u-sonic cleaning method. I really like the "deep clean" of parts and mechanisms I would rather not take apart for fear of spring, clip, pin losses. It is easy to put the parts in, blow them dry, quench them with a good water inhibitor (WD40) and blow them off a second time and put things back together. I have seen this used on AR parts for carbon buildup and it seems to work very well so overall I am becoming a fan of the u-sonic cleaner and learning the ins and outs of this as a tool/system. Do I plan on keeping my tumblers inline, yes, by all means.

You can buy AlumAseal in a powder or liquid. I carry the powder for space saving and to reduce the risk of a spill.
So far it has allowed me 3 times to drive a vehicle all the way home after a leak developed.
If you look at the testimonials on their website, you will conclude that people stop the leak and consider it a long term fix. My strategy is to use it to get home and them fix or replace the problem item since if it lets go again, I could be miles from help.
