We are very fortunate to have arranged for the artist sculptor, Ricardo Breceda, who has created these works of art, to join us on this tour. Diana Lindsay (of Sunbelt Publications) has written a book covering Mr. Breceda"s career, entitled "Accidental Artist". This overview gives a glimpse of the book:

Anyone who has traveled through Borrego Springs has seen at least a few of the amazing sculptors of Ricardo Breceda.

The following quote is from the beautifully illustrated book about Ricardo Breceda, "The Accidental Artist", by Diana Lindsey (also known for her preeminent work on the Anza-Borrego area):

"The vast Anza-Borrego Desert State Park in Southern California provides the backdrop for more than 125 life-sized metal sculptures that are a perfect blend of superb artistry and placement in open desert landscape. Ricardo Breceda, the "Accidental Artist", has taken a primitive welding art form of Mexico to new provocative heights with his creation of fanciful creatures that conjure up the past and stoke the fire of imagination."

Ricardo's sculptures can be put into 3 categories: inspired by science, inspired by the history of the Anza-Borrego region, and inspired by fantasy. As you view his sculptures, you can see the progress of his amazing talent over time, in the complexity and detail of the sculptures he created.

The sculptures are all located on land that is accessible to the general public. (Galleta Meadows Estates - land owned by Dennis Avery, philanthopist and patron of Ricardo Breceda, who granted public access for the purpose of viewing the Breceda sculptures). This will allow us to inspect the artwork up close, and get a better feel for the vision of what the artist was trying to portray, both in physical construction, and the placement of each out in the Anza-Borrego Desert region.

In a departure from the other runs, this will be an "on-road" tour through the Borrego Springs area to view, and inspect up close, the fantastic works of an amazing artist - Ricardo Breceda. Any vehicle will suffice - no special equipment or supplies should be necessary. Since we will be in the area surrounding Borrego Springs, we will be able to get gas and food in town. If possible, it would be great to consolidate the number of vehicles going for logistical purposes - in other words, it would be great to have those who want to drive offer their additional seats to others to allow as many as possible to go with the fewest needed vehicles, to save time, fuel, and to allow easier communication amongst those on the tour.

I highly recommend that anyone interested in these sculptures purchase the book by Diana Lindsay, "The Accidental Artist", available through one of OAUSA's sponsors, Sunbelt Books. It is a beautiful book in and of itself, detailing the history behind the artist and his works, along with amazing photographs of the sculptures iby various talented individuals. The book sells for $24.95, and would be a fine addition to any collection or coffee table, while providing the historical timeline of the artist and his works.

Mr. Breceda has recently located his studio in a warehouse nearby - if his schedule permits, we will make a stop at his studio, and have the opportunity to talk with him about his methods, his works, and his vision.

Hi Larry,
Since TomS's sand dunes run didn't fill up quite like I thought it would (I've PMed him) I suspect my wife and I will be joining you on this sculptures tour instead. Depending on when we finish this I'm also tempted to make a quick run up lower Coyote Canyon afterwards.
