April East Mojave trip

Post by Brucek » Fri Apr 11, 2008 9:23 am

DTK (Dave) and myself (BJK) are proposing a 2 nite 2 1/2 day trip to the East Mojave Desert on the last weekend of April. 4/25 thru the 27th. We will be leaving around noonish on Friday and returning Sunday afternoon. However those who can't get away on Fri can arrange a meeting place and time with the group on Saturday. WE afterall have Ham radios, thereby permitting comunication over reasonable distances. At this point we would like to poll the membership as to how many folks would be interested and able to make it. This will be a family style affair and geared towards most vehicles. You won't need a 4 wheel drive but I would not recommend bringing the Camery. Any rig with the clearance of a normal SUV will do. The idea is to introduce those who don't get a chance to enjoy this activity to the sport. We will be camping in a wilderness area. That means no amenities. Pack it in, pack it out. We will be bringing 2 comfortable thrones with us and one will have a privacy shield. Excavating and backfilling will be required (you get the picture). The weather is expected to be warm, but pleasant, during the day and evenings can be cool. We have 2 proposed campsites in mind. The choice will depend on the capabilities of the vehicles involved. For those of you who are familiar with the East Mojave, we will be in the New York mountains at the 5 to 6 thousand foot level. The entry point is off route 15 east of Baker Ca, then South about 1/2 an hour to Cedar Canyon Rd. This is an incredibly beautiful and vast area and not to be confused with the lower desert. There will be guided day trips including mines, petroglyphs, springs, rock formations and some historic sites. There is no wood gathering allowed in the preserve so each person will need to bring some wood to contribute to the campfire. Please post to let us know if you can join us and more info will follow.

Also note that we will be bringing all of the camping gear needed except your personal stuff, (sleeping bag, tent, clothes). We have all the cooking and eating utensils, lanterns, fire stuff, etc. If you want to go and are not sure about what you have or need, just PM BJK or DTK and we will help.

I'm in. Most likely solo with a truck and bike and self supportive.
I'm looking forward to it.

Do you have GPS Coords or a map for the location?

Thanks

Dave

BY THE WAY !!!!!!!!!!

If anyone would like to go and thinks their vehicle might be marginal please post an inquiry. We will try to find a seat for you in someone's vehicle or bring yours to the camping area and you can ride with someone on the daytrips. Bring your HT and you can be a co-pilot. To see the terrain at the campsite we will use if some of the vehicles are height challenged, Go to Google Earth. In the upper LH corner type ...Cima, Ca.... in the search window. From Cima, scroll south on Kelso/Cima road until you come to Cedar Canyon Rd. Go east on Cedar Canyon to a dirt road called Cima rd. Go north, you will find an area called the Thomas Place. Make sure you have downloaded the latest version of google and you will see some images of cameras. Click on them to see the flat/easy terrain. This area looks barren but the views are awsome and there is lots of room for vehicles. If "all" vehicles are capable, we will go further in, past the Death Valley Mine to the Cottonwood spring area to a campsite of spactacular beauty. While you're on Google, explore the area. Use the cameras. If you see anything of special interest we will try to include it on the daytrips. There is a lifetime of exploration here.

PS: Honda's (MCU) welcome

Hey Dave:

The coords are 35°10.537' N, 115°27.823' W. Yes, I have many maps of the area and can e-mail you most of what you need. If you let me know what you are looking for I can help direct you. If you are looking for detailed maps of the area, then I suggest the USGS topo maps. Nat. Geo. produces a computer program called Topo! which is a compilation of USGS topo maps and it has a great many features which make navigating in the outdoors really easy. If you need a general map to assist you in getting to the camping area, the Auto Club offerings are quite sufficient. I can help supplement either.

Hey everybody:

For a couple of reasons, including family issues, job related scheduling conflicts, and website organizational needs, we will be postponing this trip for about a month or so. As soon as things settle down a bit we will post information on the new date. Stay tuned.
