Must have items for effectively sighting in your rifle:

1. Solid Bench

Over the years, I have tried out just about every type of bench to use when I am out in the field for a day of shooting, including card tables, home made contraptions, and the folding leg tables that are often sold in places like "Home Depot. While prices did vary somewhat, there was one thing that they all had in common - they were flimsy, unsteady, or incredibly bulky and heavy. The other thing that they all shared was that they all had 4 legs. Rarely, if ever, will you find a shooting spot where the ground is level enough where all four legs have good contact with the ground.

The solution is made by Stukey's Shooting Benches. The bench accommodates right and left handed shooters, is incredibly heavy duty, is suitable for rifles and handguns, is steady on uneven ground, easy to set up, and easy to carry. It is their triangular leg design that makes this bench so steady and heavy duty. And, one of the best features is that it is made right here in the USA, in Wyoming. Their website contains more pictures and descriptions: http://www.shootingbenches.com/index.html . I have been using the Stukey shooting bench for several years, and it is, by far, the best bench I have ever used.

AND, I really like their motto:
The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.

2. Shooting chair

Stukey also offers a similarly featured shooting chair that is adjustable in height and has three legs (from the Stukey website).

3. Rifle rest

Sand Bags are great, but nothing beats a sturdy and adjustable rifle rest. I discovered the Bench Master rest rifle rest years ago and it has survived everything from some of the hardest bucking magnums to .22 rifles. It is rock solid, adjustable and padded in all the right places. It can also be bolted to the shooting table, adding to its stability. See: http://www.benchmasterusa.com/store/pro ... e-Cadillac .

One topic that might be of interest is where people shoot.

I've grown fond of FT3 Tactical in Stanton, an indoor range that allows most calibers of rifle, though limited to 25 yards. Still, with a ballistic calculator indicating the deviation from line of sight to trajectory, you can sight in pretty well at 25 yards.

http://www.fieldtimetargetandtraining.com

If anyone is willing to share, I would like to find out where target shooting can be done in the desert that's as close to Torrance as possible. Two weekends ago, I took a scouting trip around Fremont Peak north of Kramer Junction (image below). This seems a viable area, though rather far. The patchwork of BLM (yellow) and private (white) land means you'll need your GPS to ensure legal shooting on BLM land.

One other topic is legal firearm builds starting with 80% lowers (AR) or frames (1911). Two things I've learned are: 1) get your lower and jig from the same vendor, and 2) get your bolt [carrier group] and barrel from the same vendor.

Paul

There are a number of shooting rangesin the SoCal area, and some are quite good, . The California Rifle and Pistol Association compiles a list of such ranges and it can be found here: http://www.crpa.org/where-to-shoot-in-california/.

Shooting is many parts of the California Desert is still legal but it seems that it takes longer and longer to travel to such areas. Since the BLM manages many of these areas, a call to them will at least get you a good start. Good luck.

For hunters in the State of California, you probably know by now that there will soon be a complete ban on the use of ammunition containing lead. The ban will be phased in and become total by 2019. Like most of the firearm laws in this state, it is complicated and filled with risks for the unwary. The California Rifle and Pistol Association has prepared a guide to these new rules and should help keep you in compliance and out of trouble. Click this link for a copy of the Guide: http://www.crpa.org/ab-711-compliance-guide/ .

Our discussion of hearing protection last week prompted Scott Pate to bring the Sport Ear Company to our attention. Sport Ear, in their Pro Series line, makes some very impressive ear plugs which offer 27dB noise reduction, noise suppression and as much as 48db of amplification. A premium product at a premium price. Given the cost of quality hearing aids these days however, the price is not that shocking. You can view the Pro line here: http://axilpro.com/product-category/spo ... -sportear/ .

PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT

The product spotlight this week is on a new product which incorporates some brand new technology. The Conductive Composites Company out of Utah has developed a composite material that combines carbon fibers with a nickel coating. The result is an extremely lightweight electric-conducting material with the properties of plastic. And now that material is being used to create cases and computer enclosures that are essentially lightweight Faraday cages. An interesting write-up can be found here: http://arstechnica.com/information-tech ... pocalypse/.

The Faraday Cases are being marketed through the Faraday Cases Division of the Composites Company and more information can be found here: http://faradaycases.com/cases/

A well written, recent, article on personal defense for your Go Bag:

http://www.shootingillustrated.com/arti ... paign=1115

New curio or surplus firearms and how to clean them. The culprit? Cosmoline grease that has kept the like new old stock relic rust-free so as bad as you may dislike that your NOS firearm is full of gunk, it is responsible for keeping your relic rust free. How do you clean it conundrum? Hot water or mineral spirits. You have to get all the water out and re-quench the metal parts or you will find out why the the cosmoline. http://www.theboxotruth.com/educational ... e-removal/

How to stop gun crime; Wayne LaPierre says no organization has been louder or clearer on the urgent need to enforce the federal gun laws than the NRA.

https://www.nranews.com/series/wayne-la ... aign=Video

Project Appleseed: https://www.nranews.com/series/wayne-la ... aign=Video

Through Project Appleseed, the Revolutionary War Veterans Association is committed to teaching two things: rifle marksmanship and our early American heritage. We do this for one simple reason, the skill and knowledge of what our founding fathers left to us is eroding in modern America and without deliberate action, they will be lost to ignorance and apathy.

Is there a direct relationship between understanding our country's founding and civic virtue? The answer should anecdotally be quite clear. As our citizens' knowledge of founding principles has declined, so too has our involvement in this government 'of, by and for The People.' Instead, our citizens seem all too content to relegate governmental decisions and knowledge to those that have been elected, all the while assuming these officials' abilities and agendas are working on their behalf. We believe that if this trend continues, our country will be left with an expansive gulf between the populace and the government.

John Adams anticipating that our nation would one day find itself in its current plight, John Adams warned:

"Posterity! You will never know how much it cost the present Generation to preserve your Freedom! I hope you will make good use of it. If you do not, I shall repent in Heaven, that I ever took half the Pains to preserve it."

Our forebearers committed their lives to eight years of war so that their sacrifices would never require repeating. They would endow us, their posterity, with a republic from which our freedoms would be given enduring life.

North Bridge In 2009, a survey of basic, adult knowledge of the American Revolution was commissioned by the American Revolution Center (a non-profit organization dedicated to engaging the public in the history and significance of the American Revolution). The results were startling. Eighty-three percent of surveyed adults scored an average of forty-four percent - a failing score. And, yet, some glimmer of hope exists. This same survey revealed that nine in ten Americans agreed that it is important to know the history and principles forged during America's War for Independence. Does this reflect a muted cry for help? Americans seem to grasp the imperative of learning our nation's founding history, yet seem unable to act.
