08 July 27 to Aug 1 Bishop to Utah

Post by ssc » Sun Aug 03, 2008 11:43 am

Off to do a little sightseeing and wheeling. Came across a herd of Tule elk on the way to Bishop. Also stopped at Manzanar, a Japanese relocation camp. Did some wheeling around Bishop, including the Bristlecone forest. The trees are over 4500 years old. Got rain and hail. Some trails very steep with drop-offs.

Then across Nevada on less than traveled roads. You could go 30 minutes and not see another car. Almost had a close encounter with a pronghorn antelope. We took the "alien" highway. No aliens to report.

Did some wheeling around Zion. Went to a ghost town called Grafton. Does it look familiar? They filmed Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid there. Some of the trails were rocky and steep, but overall not bad.

Then to Vegas and home. A few pictures:

Wow, that's a great trip. I would love to do something like that someday. We used to go camping up the 395 when I was young. Bishop, Bridgeport, Mono Lake, Lake Tahoe. We camped at Virginia Creek. Not sure if it's still there. I remember a huge obsidian pile as well. Someday I'll take my family back there.

Thanks for sharing!

Dave,
Some of the pictures are Grafton and are so noted. I will attach a few more and Manzanar. I didn't take much at Manzanar.

Regards, SSC

Wonderful area!

I did Bishop (Coyote and the White Mtns) last year, after spending time in the Nevada desert watching the Vegas-Reno race. I might be heading to the Sweetwaters north of Mono later this month for a return...

Thanks for the pix!

Great pics, ssc !!! I love trips through less travelled areas - sometimes feels like you've stepped back in time.

Just wish I had more time available to go out on the road....
