OAUSA Net - July 28, 2016 - Get Home Bag

Post by DaveK » Thu Jul 28, 2016 3:24 pm

Our net this week will be led by our good friend Mike Ward KG6WSL. The topic will be an extension of the "How to Prepare a Bug-Out Bag" net which we did several months ago, and will cover how to prepare for the trip home, after and emergency or disaster. If you decide to make it home following an emergency, your preparations need to be different, in many respects, than those for "bugging-out."

Given the likelihood that we will face some sort of an emergency situation, this will be a fascinating and valuable discussion. Join us!

KK6CTT for an online check-in.

I hosted a net a few weeks back locally and our guest was a SPEC-OPS Veteran and buddy of mine that regularly conducts training in an official and unofficial capacity. One technique he has done is take all the gear folks show up with; the stuff they are comfortable with; give them $30 to spend at a location like Family Dollar that will be the basis of their gear going out to the training event. This is a great exercise that really tests the ability of the trainees' understanding of survival concepts. Knowledge of the potential found in common items easily obtainable that do dual duty:

1. Cotton Balls
2. Vaseline
3. 9 volt batteries
4. Steel wool
5. Knives usually sold in a package of several
6. Water container or bowl
7. String
8. Trash bags
9. Ground clothe/tarp
10. Lighters

Try it sometime, you might be surprised how much you have learned from nets like this, browsing the internet and the experiences provided each of us over lifetime. Challenge yourself by building a fire not using both hands...use your weak arm/hand. These are things that he forces some of his students through and they are all good techniques to aspire to.
