Along with the Mora Knife, I really like having a replaceable blade Folder. They are small, inexpensive, utilize very sharp blades with a number of available profiles to handle different tasks.

“A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects”.

I apologize to anybody who didn't have an opportunity to ask questions or comment during last night's net, I had a lot of material and unfortunately didn't have time to get through everything. Talking to Dave I'll probably be a somewhat regular guest on the net when topics come up that may include edged tools, for example if we do a net on paddling I may have a short discussion about the types of knives that one might need on a paddle adventure.

As I mentioned at the beginning of the net I didn't intend to say X knife is better than Y knife, but I hope I was able to describe some features of knives that may make a knife better for one purpose over another so you can make an informed decision when purchasing a knife. I'll post some links so you can do more research on your own. Be aware, a lot of the information you'll find on the internet can be a little bit misleading, marketeers and fanatics have developed a culture around knives that occasionally places more value on intangibles than facts and data. As with anything else take the information with a grain of salt, consider the source of the information, if someone can profit from information that is skewed, there is a good chance the information is questionable.

AG Russell has an online storefront and a fairly comprehensive encyclopedia of knife terms:

Crucible Steel has some informative datasheets on the steels they manufacture, the data is fairly technical, but most of the data sheets have some charts that make useful comparisons to other steels:

There is a wealth of information and mis-information on various forums:
