It's kind of scary the first time you take a hole saw to any vehicle but I think you'll be pleased with the results . You'll get the best performance for the bucks with a permanent mount and a good ground plane antenna.

If vertical clearance is a problem you may want to consider a Diamond K9000 motorized mount to fold down the antenna when entering a low parking garage or drive thru. They may be mounted directly to flat surface or attached to a roof rack. The drawbacks are that you must use an antenna which doesn't require a ground plane and the cost of the mount (~$110).

Yeah, it is. I have a bike rack on top, and I already got stuck once in a parking structure.

Many antenna have a fold-over feature - while definitely not as trick as the power-folding K9000, is does leave you with the excellent ground plane for better range and reception, and a larger selection of antennas to choose from....

I am of the drill the hole ilk.

My best performing antenna is the one that is currently connected to the hard mount NMO mount.

I have several antennas up and have tested several mounts. I have always had the best performance even when magnet mounting antennas in the same location.

I have had more water leaks with magnet or lip mounts than the through the roof mounts.

This mount has a smaller diameter section that limits this water leakage problem.

I will eventually drill another hole for the other antenna I just havent had the time to go out and buy the mount and connector.

My primary radio is a Kenwood TM-D700A It is mounted under the passenger seat and the remote head is located on the center console I have a remote speaker mounted above the rear view mirror.
