I just had to share some of my favorite camp lighting/lanterns.

The pics below include several lanterns. I love the Dietz No. 1 because of its extra large tank. Of course, any of the Coleman lanterns from the 1952 "Christmas Lantern" to the 1957 "Professional Model (that is the model 202) or even the 242C from 1948. Any of the 220a models are awesome but my favorites are the 1962 through 1964 models (especially the "burgundy" models).

I also just love the LED (very inexpensive) lanterns. Easy to use, batteries last forever, small and very practical.

One more picture for your entertainment.

This is my 1914 Model T. You will notice the Kerosene Lanterns located near the cab. This was the state of the art side lighting in 1914. Coincidentally 1914 is the year that William Coffin Coleman introduced the Pressure Lanterns from the Coleman Company!

18650 Lithium Ion versus AA NiMH

Doing a little math, the nominal voltage of a 18650 lithium ion battery is 3.6V. A higher end 18650 of 3400mAh which weighs 47g (1 5/8 oz) would therefore store about 12.24 Wh (watt hours) of energy. A NiMH AA Eneloop with nominal voltage of 1.2V and 2550 mAh rating weighing 30g would store 3.06 Wh, taking four Eneloop AAs (weighing 120g or 4 1/4 oz) to match the 12.24 Wh of the 18650.

Thus the 18650 power density by weight is about 2.5 times greater than a NiMH AA. This may seem small relative to battery weight, but the brighter and longer lasting light sources might use 2, 3, or even 4 18650 batteries or 5 to 10 ounces difference.


Battery Recharger

Even on long trips, I bring sufficient batteries such that I won't need to recharge. However the Olight UC Magnetic USB Charger for $10 is a small and convenient recharger that works on virtually all rechargeable batteries at 750 mA.

Tent and Table Lantern

The Nitecore LR30 uses a single 18650 battery, can provide 205 white lumens for 3 1/2 hours or 45 red lumens for 8 hours. There is a built-in loop that folds out from the base to hang this light inside of your tent. There is also an AA version with similar capabilities.

Lightweight Headlamp

The Streamlight Bandit is small and lightweight COB (chip on board) headlamp. It provides 180 lumens (2 hours) on the highest setting, but I usually use the 35 lumen (9.5 hours) setting around camp. It can also provide 45 lumens of red light, great when others are star gazing.
