Re: 2021 SOUTHERN UTAH EXPEDITION
I wanted to ask the folks toting the pop-up pick-up campers what they do to highway gas mileage?
I've pulled one of the rPods with my Tacoma and found it about halved my mileage, 20+ down to 10-ish. A neighbor pulls a pop-up tent trailer with his full-size Chevy and reports it also about halves his mileage.
I've slept under the tonneau, no hit to mileage, but wife's not up for that style of camping.

Re: 2021 SOUTHERN UTAH EXPEDITION
My Tacoma, despite having the 2.7l 4 cylinder, has never had very good mileage. When I got it it had a regular cap over the bed. The best highway mileage I ever got was 20mpg.
With the FlipPac camper on the truck I get 18 mpg. There is a lot of wind noise. I tried making a foam board fairing to go between the top of the cab and the camper. It helped to reduce the wind noise but surprisingly I didn’t see any appreciable mileage improvement.

The best I have got without the shell is 20 mpg. The best I have got with the camper is 15 mpg. Somebody once told me everybody gets 10 mpg when you hit the trail. The terrain makes a big difference. I averaged about 12 on that trip. Carrying an additional 30 gallons of water and 30 gallons of fuel plus the camping gear's weight, pulling the long uphill grades on the freeway, doesn't help the cause either. It's a not stock 4.6 V8 with 35 tires and 456 gears
God made man, but Samuel Colt made them equal.

Thanks, Bruce and LuckyJohn --
I could live with a 2 mpg hit; even 5 would be better than towing that trailer. The 10 mpg hit hurt -- made fuel planning a thing, just to get to my sister and BILs place in eastern OR, on a run out I-84.

My Jeep gets 13 mpg on freeways, streets, trails, and falling off cliffs with the engine turned off. I will never win a MPG contest, but I like the vehicle and just work the fuel expense into the cost of outdoor fun...so far, the fuel has bever been a deal breaker.LuckyJohn wrote: ↑Tue Jul 20, 2021 9:23 pm The best I have got without the shell is 20 mpg.
