Bernie

So sorry to hear about your brother. Way too young for that kind of diagnosis.

Your new vehicle sounds like a great way for you to go camping, and maybe put some of our recommendations to good use. Be sure and post up your new adventures.

Yes, our father had Prostate Cancer in his 50's, but survived until he reached 73 years old, when the Cancer came back in his blood stream...and Mom made it to 80...but thanks...I will if I do have some adventures like I used to have back in the 70's, 80's, and 90's, but the people that used to go camping with me aren't around anymore, some passed away, some have moved to other states, etc, except for my best friend, who's around, but due to problems with swelling, of the feet, legs, etc, last year he went on disability, so I don't think that he'll be going camping anymore, so if I go, I'll probably be by myself, unless I find new people to camp with.

I have the back seats folded down in the SUV as I have my 29-inch Mongoose bicycle in the back of it...not sure whether I'll put a bike carrier on the SUV or not.

Okay, here are my real necessities in no particular order:

Okay... this may not represent a “complete” list of essentials!

Great net as usual. Late to the party, KK6CTT.

Load out needs:
o Camera
o Machete
o Chow

Lasagna with a little different make up: Noodles were cooked at home and chilled before the trip. Alfredo sauce, olives, ricotta cheese, chicken breast pieces (also pre-cooked), layered in the DO, spiced to taste and set for 350° for about 45-60 minutes...long enough to get it all warmed and gooey-ed up.

o TP/E-tool
o Maps and compass (okay GPS too)
o Headlamp
o Poncho Liner/tarp/poncho
o Binos/optics
o Radios for down time
o Clothes line
o A roll of quarters if we have to visit the laundry mat along the way
o All the things that keep the wife and family interested in the outing and adventure
o Note pad to list items needed or forgotten
o A running spreadsheet that is updated every time we return

NOTE: All of the lessons learned on camping trips can be added to a person's understanding and application of fieldcraft. Fieldcraft is where all those over-landing articles, YouTube videos and Scouting experiences come together and provide a base for actually meeting the challenge of any situation to include and although not mentioned "survival" and "emergency preparation." How you nest all these skills together in your toolbox of knowledge can be invaluable.
