BuzzyWaxx (Product Link) Can $7.

Cast iron seasoning product. It applies very easily like a paste wax. Doesn’t smoke or smell as bad as other oils when it polymerizes. Seems more non-stick than other seasoning products. Can also be used to protect wooden utensils.

How to Apply

Comes also as a “kit” with reusable microfiber towels for $22.

Camp Maid Kickstand & Lid Lifter $21. (Product Link)

Great mainly when heating your Dutch oven from the bottom. Lifts lids and supports it off the ground.

Using the “kickstand” will obviously dump any coals that were on top of the lid, so has limited use for baking with charcoal. Admittedly, I use this mostly for Dutch oven cooking at home inside a regular an oven.

Kellam Knives Billhook (Product Link) $132

In my opinion, this is the best tool for creating kindling and tinder from branches. Super sharp 7½” blade, light weight.

Or

Fiskars Billhooks $42 - $67 (Product Link)

I was going to suggest a less expensive Fiskars billhook, which I’ve used, but that product is apparently discontinued, replaced by these: a 6” blade version for $42 has serrated teeth on the spine and a 9” blade for $55 has standard saw teeth (unfortunately not “razortooth” crosscut pruning saw teeth).

I noticed that Fiskars also makes this crazy $67 thing with 18” blade which is a combination axe and billhook. Highly rated on Amazon 4.6 of 5, selling for $45. Holy grail of outdoor wood processing? Probably not … check the reviews.

GIFT SUGGESTIONS

1. For All the handloaders

Anyone who has been handloading (reloading) for a while knows that there is no shortage of books, magazines and articles on the subject. As we put a few years under our belts, we gain a perspective on which sources have turned out to be the best. On that subject, I have found Glen Zediker's books are among the very best for all shooters, whether recreational, competitive, tactical, or hunting. The book, "Top-Grade Ammo", covers step by step directions on handloading, recommends the necessary tools and gear, and has some very inventive and helpful tricks. Zediker passed away about a year ago, and for a while his books were hard to find, but it seems that the family is now publishing his works.

2. For All the AR Fans

America's rifle, and the most prevalent of all makes, is the creation of Eugene Stoner. The gun was, and still is, known as the "AR", which, by the way, stands for Armalite Rifle. It's popularity is due in large part to Stoner's ingenious design and the fact that the rifle platform is popular and capable for almost every level of hunting, for competition, self defense, and recreational shooting. Glen Zediker was a competitive shooter, primarily with an AR, and during his career, he became one of the most successful. There are two of his books that cover the topic of AR building, performance and maintenance, and should be on the shelf of every AR shooter.

3. For All the 4WD Off-Roaders

Everyone who actually uses their 4WD vehicle as it was designed, knows that we all have 4 pieces of equipment, known as tires, that are subjected to an enormous amount of rough treatment, and that sooner or later, will be damaged, aka a flat tire. We believe that every 4WD vehicle should have a tire repair kit as a mandatory piece of your equipment, and that you should know how to use it. A great gift idea for the family members who wander off road.

As it turns out, tires go flat in the city too, and having that same kit in every vehicle is a great idea. Safety Seal kits are a time-tested and popular option for repairing tires. And, to the extent that you can convince family members to to carry these kits, and learn how to use them, this can be a great gift idea. Made in the USA.

4. For All the Hunters Who Glass

If you are the type of hunter that glasses your hunting area for any length of time, having a steady mount for your binoculars is a must. There is just no way to hand hold your binocs to see the subtle movements of your game, especially with higher magnification powers (10x and above, IMHO.) Aside from missing these subtle movements, wobbling binocs will sooner or later (and probably sooner) result in eye strain. If you are traveling distances to get to your hunting or glassing spot, having a light weight and rugged tripod is the key to success, and that is where carbon fiber shines. Meopta makes a well made, light weight, rugged, versatile, and affordable tripod that is just what you will need. Made in the Czech Republic.

5. For All Who Enjoy Coffee in the Outdoors

Some might call us "coffee nuts", but they are usually the ones that still drink instant coffee. In keeping with our tradition of comfort camping, we have explored and devised a lot of ways to effectively enjoy some of our favorite food and drinks while camping in the remote wilderness. Coffee is one of those drinks, and having pre-ground coffee, prepared properly, is a favorite way to start our camping day. Preparing fresh ground coffee beans, ground right at camp, is just another step up in comfort. Traveling compactly is always one of our priorities, and that means that a hand grinder is the answer here. The Red Rooster Trading company makes such a grinder, made in the USA. The grinder uses an adjustable ceramic burr which will produce everything from a super fine grind (Turkish) to a coarse grind (French Press) and everything in between.
