PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT - EMERGENCY EGG SUPPLY

Tonight's product spotlight should be of interest to wilderness campers as well as preppers. One of the lifestyles we promote (and live) is the enjoyment of the outdoors with all of the comfort items to which we have become accustomed while at home. Specifically, spending time in the primitive wilderness never means that we have to leave behind the great food we have come to appreciate at home.

And, if you expect to have the family survive under emergency or disaster type conditions, it would be best to have your food supplies be as tasty as that which they enjoy when things are "normal." Don't believe me.........just see how long the family can endure the taste of cardboard emergency food before you have a rebellion on your hands.

The topic of food items that will keep you and your camping companions happy as well as food items that will satisfy the family under emergency conditions, is a huge one which we will address later during our net on Urban Survival. But, the spotlight tonight is on something everyone enjoys, and that is eggs. Store bought eggs have a definite short shelf life, and unless you are fortunate enough to have chickens, your supply of fresh eggs will not last very long, especially with a family.

The solution is a simple one and it is marketed under the name of OvaEasy. Their freeze dried egg crystals are 100% eggs, and aside from the virtually identical taste of real eggs, these crystals come in packaging that allows the eggs to be stored for up to three years (and no refrigeration needed.)

Here is what they say (https://ovaeasy.com/pages/how-we-make-egg-crystals)
Our crystal freeze-drying process is special because it works at low-temperature and doesn't damage the flavor or functionality of the eggs. We start with wholesome fresh eggs and gently evaporate the water, leaving only little crystals of pure egg. That's why we call them Egg Crystals! When you go to cook our Egg Crystals later, they taste just like fresh eggs!

Other egg powders are made with a process called spray-drying that's been around since at least the 1930's. It's a process designed for cheap industrial products. Spray drying exposes egg to very high temperatures – usually 390º F – to remove moisture.

Egg is very sensitive to heat. Just think of how quickly you can fry an egg in a pan, you can even fry an egg on the hood of car on a sunny day. The very high temperatures used in spray drying ruins the egg whites and denatures the protein. And those spray dried powders end up with off-flavors, diminished nutritional value and lower functionality. Spray dry egg companies do this because they're producing for cheap industrial markets and they're trying to produce as cheaply as they can. Powdered egg is typically used in mass market baked products, cookies, muffins, pasta and things like that. They're not meant to be eaten by themselves, only as a small ingredient in another food product so you can't notice the off-flavors.

OvaEasy Egg Crystals are made with our own proprietary crystal freeze-drying technology that dries them under 130º F, preserving their fresh taste and high quality proteins! No other company in the world does what we do.

These egg crystals are an integral part of my camping and preps food supply. I have have eaten them myself as has the family, and I highly recommend them.

I wanted to develop a defensive load that might discourage bears for a short-barreled .44 Magnum revolver.

The known loads with slower-burning powders ( e.g., H110) resulted in too much powder burning outside of the barrel.

YouTube used regular playback speed, not the slo mo I uploaded.
Load Development

I read good reviews about the Xtreme Defense line of bullets from Lehigh Defense, so chose the caliber-appropriate version.

Lehigh Defense .429 160gr Xtreme Defense Bullet

I asked Lehigh for data using faster burning powders suited to a short barrel, specifically Tightgroup. I was surprised when they responded rather quickly with the following data. The lower end maybe, but the upper end is not a “reduced recoil load”!

At the maximum loading of 11.0 gr of Tightgroup, these were starting to hurt, but tolerable.
