OAUSA Net - March 3, 2022 - Coffee Roasting

Post by DaveK » Sun Feb 27, 2022 11:02 am

Coffee Roasting

We appreciate good coffee. Over the years we have evolved from over the campfire percolator coffee to full blown coffee productions at our outback camping locations. The coffee that we now enjoy is better than anything that your favorite corner coffee store can offer. While the coffee itself is better, we can say with absolute certainty that the fabulous outdoor experience, along with that great cup, make for the very best!!!!

Without doubt, the foundation for that fabulous experience, is the coffee itself. It is no exaggeration that we have taken our coffee very seriously, and to that end, we now have a member of OAUSA that has procured a roaster. This net will be about the production of what we believe will be one of the best coffee offerings anywhere. Jack KK6WXQ, will be our speaker, along with his third party guest, to discuss coffee bean roasting.

I suspect that as Jack develops his skills as a roaster, we will be seeking some of his coffee at our upcoming Field Day event. Just another reason to join us!

It is my pleasure to share what (little) I know about coffee roasting. In the last year, I was fortunate enough to get my hands on a Diedrich Commercial Coffee Roaster. After running about 100lbs of beans through the roaster (just to season the drum and the machine) we have now done a few roasts of coffee.

On the Net, I will introduce my friend Nathan Mattfeld who is a truly experienced roaster.

In addition to Nathan, it is my hope that anybody with any roasting experience might be willing to share their experiences.

My biggest aha moment came when I sipped my first cup of freshly roasted ... (within 24 hours of the roast) and tasted the difference. It was one of those moments where you say...”so THIS is what coffee tastes like!” ;-)

I’m looking forward to sharing all my secrets... (there are not many!) and discussing and hearing more about coffee roasting.

Here is a picture of Nathan standing next to my roaster.

Roasting my own beans

I always like to try new things and since coffee is always a hot topic at OAUSA events, I thought I would give coffee roasting a try.

You really don’t need much to get started:
1- Green coffee beans can be purchased at many small
coffee houses.
2. I used my 12” cast iron skillet.
3. You can use a stove top but I found the process produces
a significant amount of smoke so I opted for my Coleman
stove in the backyard.

The process I found online is simple:
1. Soak the beans quickly in some water.
2. Place in a pan over medium heat and periodically
agitate to allow them to turn to a light to dark
chocolate color, depending on your taste.
3. Let cool, grind and use as usual.

I certainly didn’t control all of the nuances of a professional roaster, but what I got was a great cup of coffee that rivaled most anything from a traditional coffee house.
