Re: OAUSA Net - September 22, 2022 - Off-Road Electrical Power
Rick CTT and Kevin DGL brought up the fact that there are different types of “lithium” batteries.
This article explores the important differences between lithium-ion (Lion) and lithium iron phosphate (LiFePo) which I’ll summarize:
This article explores the important differences between lithium-ion (Lion) and lithium iron phosphate (LiFePo) which I’ll summarize:
- Lion has a nominal voltage of 3.6V; LiFePo has a nominal voltage of 3.2V
- Lion and LiFePo have similar charge rates with LiFePo being somewhat faster
- LiFePo has a much greater discharge rate to power hungry applications
- Lion has an energy density of 150-200 watt-hour per kilogram; LiFePo is 90 - 120 Wh/kg
- Lion can last for 500 - 1000 cycles; LiFePo for 1000 - 10000
- Lion and LiFePo have similar shelf life with LiFePo being somewhat better
- Lion is more unstable and heats up faster, possibly leading to “thermal runaway” (i.e., fire and explosion)
- Lion contains toxic / hazardous materials; LiFePo is non-toxic
