OAUSA Net – May 04, 2023 – Wine in the Outdoors

Post by toms » Sun Apr 30, 2023 3:42 pm

Wine is a beloved beverage that is often associated with indoor activities such as dinner parties or romantic evenings at home. However, enjoying wine in the great outdoors can be a unique and memorable experience. Whether you're sipping a glass of red wine while watching the sunset from a mountain top or enjoying a chilled white wine, wine and nature can be a wonderful pairing.

But what are the best practices for enjoying wine in the outdoors? How do you properly store and transport wine when hiking or camping? What type of wine is best suited for outdoor activities, and what are the ideal serving temperatures? These are all questions that wine lovers may consider when planning an outdoor adventure.

Additionally, there are environmental considerations when enjoying wine in nature. How can we minimize our impact on the environment while still enjoying our favorite wines? Are there sustainable wine options that are better suited for outdoor activities?
Overall, the topic of wine in the outdoors offers a rich and diverse range of discussions, from practical tips to philosophical debates about the intersection of wine and nature.

Our returning guest and Wine Master is Lynda KI6SXI. Lynda is a wealth of information on wine.
Lynda Harman will lead discussions on the following:
- Wine blogs to follow for good buys e.g. Reverse Winesnob and Costco Wine Blog
- Best Buy’s in Wine at Costco and Trader Joe’s
- Wine storage temperature and serving suggestions
- Decanting vs Aeration of wine; differences, impacts and why we do it
- California Wineries committed to sustainable farming and what the means\
- Differences Between Dry Farming and Irrigation
- Cooking with wine; white vs red

We will review OZV old vine Zinfandel, a new recommendation from Lynda. If you want to follow along and give us your input Thursday night, consider purchasing a bottle at Total Wine and More for under $10.00.

Remember – you cannot be mobile if you are drinking wine (or any alcohol or any of those wacky cigarettes)!!
See you on the Trail!

Enjoying Wine In The Remote Outdoors

Many things go into a successful remote wilderness adventure, and one of them just happens to be a social time, with wine, before and during the evening meal. Wine has a unique ability to accent wonderful surroundings and good friends.

Not everyone on our remote adventures appreciates wine, but there has been more than one occasion where we were able to treat those folks to some good wines, who gained a good appreciation by trips end.
